One Great Book

Do not be misled by the cartoon on the cover of the book, and the low price. This is one of the best books I have read on self-help and I have at least 100 books on the subject.

This book is based on the concept of Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy. The suggestions in this book are based on science. This book is one of the best books I have read that will help people with all sorts problems in their lives. Problems such as anxiety, anger, problems in relationships, etc.
These problems have various sources, so I'm not saying this book will help you cure them. However, if those problems are partly because of what's discussed in this book, then in my opinion you can be helped from this book.

There are all kinds of problems and difficulties that people have in life that have a basis in what's discussed in chapters 2,4,5, and 6.

If you are open-minded, and work hard to follow the suggestions in those chapters, then you may see dramatic results in your life.

However, it takes time to get the results because you have been living differently for quite a while. So, with anything else worthwhile it will be necessary to commit time and be patient for real change to occur. You will be rewarded though.

After you read this book, and you decide you are serious about change, you will need to buy the book titled, "Reason to Change" by Windy Dryden (same author). That book will show you how to go about developing the changes you want. It gives you a detailed outline showing you exactly how to do it.

So, reading this book isn't enough. You'll have to get the other book to learn how to apply it to your life.

I have bought hundreds of books here and this is the first review I have done. I am that compelled. Be aware that I am not a mental health student or professional. My opinions are based on my own experiences applying the information from this book.

Excellent starting point

This is a great little book on the subject of REBT. If you're like me and you want immediate profound results, you're never going to get that from a book. This book will however, start to change your thought processes and hopefully get you to the point of accepting your thought patterns and working towards changing them. Another excellent book I would recommend to you is No More Mr. Nice Guy. It is great to accept that you have a problem and then start working towards fixing it. Best of luck.

About the Author

A Wide Variety of Information

There is a ton of information in the book. From the history of the Chantry and nations to the Chant of Light, a cook book, children's stories, and new info about the people around our player characters.

Perhaps my favorite part of the book was the Chant of Light. The style it is written in makes it feel very much like a real world religious text, and it gives some insight into Andrastianism. On top of that, there are some interesting looks into the backstory of Thedas, mostly from the Canticles that the Chantry struck from the Chant. The Canticle of Silence is perhaps the most intriguing of these.

Another of the best sections is the one on Legends of Thedas. There is information here that can't be found anywhere else, and that gives a different perspective on some of them, such as Maferath.

The sections on the Hero of Ferelden, Hawke, and the Inquisitor mostly contain info we already know, but there is a lot of insight into the companions before the player characters met them. And best of all, the text doesn't mention specific actions in the games, leaving plenty of room for your canon.

The section of children's stories is charming, though a handful are more unsettling than anything. Not much different than some real world children's stories.

The cook book is neat, though I'm not sure I would ever use most of the recipes. Nevertheless, it gives some insight into the cultures who make these dishes.

Finally comes the bestiary. It contains concept art and information on most, though not all, of the creatures in Inquisition. I think the best part is info on the individual subtypes of dragons, who we don't know a lot about in the game.

The art in this book is stunning. From locations to characters, you can tell that a lot of work was put into this book. Do note, whoever, that there's a lot of concept art, so things don't always look like their in-game depictions.

The size of the book is both good and bad. It's great that they managed to fit so much into the book, but it does make it rather large and heavy. One of the developers joked over Twitter that it could be used as a bludgeon, and he wasn't kidding. However, I think a hard copy is still the best, as you get to see the contents in all their glory.

There wasn't much I disliked about the book, aside from its massive size. I did see a handful of spelling errors, though they were confined to very minor character names, who weren't in the games, and might reflect the names of those characters in earlier stages.

Overall, I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to know more about Thedas.

Stick to the hard copy version, the Kindle version has serious accessibility issues/is LAZILY digitized.

While the art remains beautiful, for an e-book I paid so much money for, the digitization is lazy, and makes the book pretty much unreadable/worthless to me as ebook.

I read on my phone usually, I do not own an iPad or Kindle- and this book is just image scans- which for whatever reason I cannot zoom in on in order to read the text, which on my phone is super tiny.

I therefore cannot read it for long or well if I'm not home and using cloud/etc to have it on actual computer monitor.

Not only does the book not allow for zooming in on pages in this ebook/Kindle edition, it has no links within it to get to chapters or table of contents easily- if you want to read just one chapter, not the whole thing in one go, you must manually flip pages/scroll page bar if you know what page you're looking for. My Android's Kindle app also doesn't allow me to make bookmarks to find specific pages.

If you use ebooks due to a need to be able to zoom text and images, and better read thanks to poor vision or other disabilities, it's not going to work with this, which is a shame, because the illustrations are gorgeous, and the canon/lore seems interesting. I suspect I'd give the non-digital version more stars, but the absolute lack of ANY kind of trying to make the ebook version work smoothly and be easy to get through just makes me say do not get this version if you have other options.

ESPECIALLY at the price being charged. I can forgive a lack of bookmarking or chapter links, zooming, a bit more easily when it's a small publisher or self-publisher and the book is only a few dollars, but for the price being charged for this, it's absolutely ridiculous.

Bad accessibility for many kindle-app compatible devices

Yikes, this Kindle edition is effectively unreadable on a Nexus 7, an 11" laptop, or my phone. None of these devices allow you to zoom in on the text -- instead, you have to laboriously click subsections and then bring up a little bit to read.

There really needs to be some sort of warning about just how unsuited this conversion is for a non high res device, or (better yet) fix the scan or let us pan around the text.

Seriously, I normally love kindle e-books, and this conversion is the worst.

The book begins with the generalized segmental organization characteristic of vertebrates and then examines the most obviously segmented parts of the human body: the bones, muscles, vessels, and nerves of the trunk between the neck and the pelvis. The book progresses through regions where the simple organizational plan has undergone more and more radical modifications and ends with the ancient and extreme specializations found in the head. At each step, the authors widen our intellectual understanding of how these modifications have been imposed, onto-genetically or phylogenetically, upon simpler precursors.

The prose is personal and literate, peppered with inventive elucidations of concepts and accompanied by a wealth of illustrations designed for conceptual clarity and ease of visualization. The level of presentation has been finely tuned, over several years of class testing, to enhance its pedagogical effectiveness in human anatomy courses.

Anatomy explained

Most anatomy books are dry. I'm a radiology resident, and have looked through several trying to find one that would be easily digestible. This is the one. The text is full of interesting explanations of structure and function from the standpoint of evolutionary biology. Why do the testicles descend from the abdomen during development? The authors go back to the mesonephros of primitive ocean vertebrates and explain it in a few simple sentences.
Pictures are more descriptive than accurate; it's no atlas. But if you like learning by understanding instead of by rote, I think this book will do you proud.

I never expected to rip one of Max Freedom Long's books. ;-(

I see that MR. Long fell into the same trap that Scott Cunningham and many others fall into when they allow their previous faith to color their view when writing about another faith.
I Greatly respect the works of Max Freedom Long, but here is one instance where he is wrong. He saw tenets in Huna closely meshed with the tenets in "christianity" the faith he was exposed to earlier in life, and assumed that "christianity" adopted the tenets of Huna.
Virtualy all faiths have similar tenets. I have explored virtualy all faiths from Buddhism to Witta, and they all have similar tenets, but this does not mean that one faith is an offshoot of another faith or they were incorporated after encountering another faith.
I think I have read all of Max's writings except for "What Jesus Taught In Secret". and I can tell you that Mr. Long did an admirable job of preventing Huna from disappearing forever. However; Mr. Long has presented an INCOMPLETE picture of HUNA. Nowhere in Max's writings have I seen him discuss the Huna deities like Hina, Kane, Ku, Pele, etc, Nor have I seen him discuss the kapu (religion taboos).
I am a devout pagan (American Indian Spirituality), but I continue to seek for answers.

Understanding brings Clarity

Max Freedom Long ... what a powerful name! And from him comes this powerfully liberating, new (relatively speaking) writing ... which for some of us, will present new possible meanings for other, older writings ... Bible, Eastern, etc., using the "Huna Code" ... deeper meanings of Polynesian root words and symbolism from ancient Egypt.
The Huna Code in Religions is a fascinating read which takes you from the Egypt of over 2,000 years ago to modern times in Polynesia. Along the way it points out the common higher truths found in the worlds major religions while providing us with compelling evidence which suggests that ancient initiates of the "Huna system" may have been a major spiritual influence for them all.
On a personal level, the information in this book provided me the opportunity to understand why, in the past, I always felt like I didn't "fit in" ... why I knew things didn't have to be the way they were, the way others said they had to be ... I was able to become clear about life as a "human being".
To "understand" is a choice ... with clarity being the natural outcome of the choice to "understand". The Huna Code in Religions provides us the opportunity to make that choice. As Shakespeare said "To be or not to be, that is the question".
When the saying "Know thyself" resonates with you, more than likely, so will this book.
Then, for a more in-depth understanding of the Bible ... specifically the ministry of Jesus ... please treat yourself to one of Max Freedom Long's other books "What Jesus taught in Secret".

Most religious teachings seem to say one thing and mean yet another. After 30 years of research Max Freedom Long discovered ties between the ancient Hawaian Religion and the even older lost religions from which all others seem to have evolved. Simply The Best Progression Betting Book, Ever!

Koetsch has conducted the most complete evaluation of progression betting strategies published to date. Anyone who has visited Vegas or Atlantic City, and dropped a small fortune when a progressive betting strategy went south will appreciate the extensive work Koetch has done to help change that result. He examines the use of moderate positive progression strategies mixed with a limited martingale negative progression. The easy to follow charts demonstrate to the reader that these progressions could be used to end short sessions of 100 decisions in the black almost every time.
The writer is an engineer, and his short-efficient prose make even the most complex principles of statistical theory accessible to the non-math oriented player. Don't be fooled by the tables and math though, because this is a very practical text. The author invites the reader to pick the progression that fits his or her temperament for short term swings, and provides the player a very likely chance to leave the table within a 1-2 hours with a decent gain.
On the other hand, Koetsch's science background contributes to the strength of the book in another way too. His detailed explanation of the experiment, and the circumstances of the program used inspires confidence in the reliability of the results, as well as his personal integrity: a welcome departure from many popular authors on gambling. I would not be surprised if his work spawns new interest from the MIT set in betting strategies as a potential success tool in low vig games such as craps, blackjack, and baccarat. My hope is Koetch continues his work on the subject, and for anyone who wants the best chance to come home a winner on any given trip to a casino destination, the book should be first on your list to buy.

Useless book

As a programmer, I also interesting in different betting system. When I first look at the title of the book, I feel lucky enough that I finally find a correct book to conquest the casino, as a programmer, we can program a betting system to see is working or not.

After I finish reading, I feel very disappointing about this book, there are no any systems in this book can win money in the long run, and all the analyse information in this book can be done in one day!

The author suggest "QUIT" when you ahead the casino. Yes, in 86% of the time, it works, but there are still 12% remaining that never get ahead the casino, once you together all the short section into a long section, you can find you still lose your money by the odd and the "law of large number".

Don't waste your money, try the other authors like Fred Renzey, Frand Scoblete, Peter Griffith, Stanford Wong and Ken Fuchs.

A revealing statistical anaysis

I thoroughly enjoyed this book because it provides a revealing statistical analysis of several popular betting strategies. I have not seen this type of statistical analysis elsewhere. Koetsch has written computer programs to run the numbers with millions of trials to give statistically significant results. The results are clearly interpreted and explained in the book. Tables are also included for those of us that prefer a glance at the numerical results. If you are interested in an analysis of the best betting strategy to use based on statistical evidence, then I heartily recommend this well-written book!

Grade 6-10-Boston Jane is as feisty as ever, but with a distinctively sharper edge. And with good reason. She has endured several months with smelly, uncouth old men, in less-than-pristine living conditions, in the wilderness of Washington Territory. Now, to increase her emotional burdens, the "proper" young woman from Philadelphia receives word that her father has died. The challenges of the wilderness begin to bring out the worst in her; she is prickly and feels unappreciated by those around her. Trusting a "gentleman" stranger, she inadvertently puts a friend's life in danger and she and two companions, one of whom is a love interest, trek through the wilds to reach the Stevens Negotiations between the Indians and the territorial government representatives, including Jane's pompous former fiance. She comes to recognize her true friends as she braves adverse conditions and returns to Shoalwater Bay with her emotional wounds less raw, and her retorts less sharp. Readers unfamiliar with Boston Jane: An Adventure (HarperCollins, 2001) are quickly brought up to speed on the previous events and memorable characters. Details are interestingly revealed and are, for the most part, historically accurate. The Stevens Negotiations actually took place, although the timing has been changed. (Holm acknowledges this in an author's note.) The depiction of life in the wilderness reflects experiences found in first-person accounts of pioneer women in the 1850s. Holm continues the saga of the intrepid Miss Jane Peck, a 16-year-old Philadelphian who, in Boston Jane (2001), traveled by ship to Washington Territory to meet a fiance who married someone else. In this story, she receives news of her father's death, befriends a mysterious stranger who inquires after her protector, Mr. Russell, and then must trek through the wilderness to prevent the stranger from committing murder. Although Jane is maturing and has moved beyond her blind allegiance to the rules of Philadelphia etiquette, she still has concerns about propriety and appreciates a few civilized luxuries. These worries and her stubbornness lead to more than a few misunderstandings, especially with Jehu, the sailor-turned-settler who loves her. As always, Holm keeps her touch light, sly, and humorous. The dichotomy of Jane's attempts to inhabit a "proper" world in the soggy, flea-bitten wilderness of 1854 Washington Territory is funny and romantic and should have wide appeal. Kay Weisman

If you haven't read Holm's first book in this series, "Boston Jane: An Adventure" and her Newbery honor winner, "Our Only May Amelia," pick them up now! Then dig into "Wilderness Days." Holm continues her fascination with the America's Paciific Northwest with the story of Jane Peck, a young girl from Philadelphia (in the 1850s) who follows a foolish young man to the Washington frontier. But whereas, in Book 1, proper and upright Miss Peck was newly come to the frontier, with its grubby men and lack of manners, in "Wilderness Days" she has to confront not only her decision to stay on the frontier, but also her basic notions of home, family, and friends. She also gets a rude awakening when a REAL "proper young lady" joins her frontier community. All of this drama takes place against a rich historical backdrop, including the climactic real-life rendezvous between Washington state's first governor, Isaac Stevens, and the native tribes of the Pacific Northwest (the members of whom are friends of young Miss Peck) that would decide the fate of the Indians, settlers, and future generations of Americans. Not a book any schoolkid should miss!

A nice easy read

I found this story of "Boston" Jane a fast paced easy and interesting read. This was the first Jane story that I have read, but I found it understandable despite the fact that it was not the first book in the series. The character Jane describes in first person her experiences in the NorthWest pre-major migration. She seemed realistic and strong. I was sick of reading about girls my age who found love and just kissed the guy and that was it. In this story, Jane is unsure of her love for a certain sailor (who the reader knows to be the perfect match throughout the novel) but in the end gets together with him. Janes strong will probably was not historically accurate, but it made for a great read.

One of the Greatest Books of all Time

This book is one of the greatest books of all time! It includes all of the elements I love in books- romance, adventure, and a happy ending. The world has never seen anything as wonderful as Boston Jane: Wilderness Days. It is my favorite book in the series! Jennifer L. Holm is a genius!

Think of this as the version for those with shorter attention spans

Like many of the other reviewers out there, I saw this on the shelves and wondered if it was something new. But it only took a minute to realize it was one of the parts of the previously published first volume: if you look at the table of contents of the first volume, "Odalisque" is the name of the third book in that volume; I could understand some of the complaints of the other reviewers if they had actually changed the titles, but "Odalisque" really is the third part of the Baroque Cycle (and Stephenson wrote in an interview that he deliberately did not call this the Baroque Trilogy).

Rather than consider this a cheap marketing gimmick, one might consider that this is the way it would have been published first time around for most books and most publishers. The Baroque Cycle really was written as 9 separate but linked novels. Stephenson said in an interview attached to the paperback version of "System of the World" volume that it could have been published as 9 separate books or as one huge book and they opted to originally publish it as three roughly 1000 page volumes, each containing three distinct books (with the difference that in the "Confusion" volume, these books are not separated but entwined, since they take place along the same timeline but with different characters in different places). But some readers who would be intimidated by a 1000 page volume would have no problem picking up a shorter novel and then reading the next one if they liked the first. If you happen to enjoy bulky novels, that is no reason to be offended by the fact that it's not everyone's cup of tea.

Note that this is not a paid advertisement or apology. I just happen to really like the cycle as a whole and I'm happy to have Stephenson's publishers market it any way they can to be sure he gets compensated well and can continue writing. It only keeps getting better (and bigger!) with each new work -- but at the same time there is no denying that his works have gotten more intimidating as well. My impression is that there is a relatively smaller crowd of people who were able to make the commitment to finish the third volume of this series, than those who read his previous novels like Snowcrash or Cryptonomicon. If breaking it down increases its readership, I'm all for it.

Warning: NOT a complete or new version of a book!

Or even whole book! OK, right off the bat, I'd like to say that I am a huge Stephenson Fan. Guess I'm not enough of a fan to remember that the original series had sub-books within the published hardcovers. I saw this book and tried to figure out if it was new or not, since it had a new title and all. Since it says on the cover, "The Baroque Cycle Number Three", I thought it might be the retitled, paperback version of the third hard cover (Which I admittedly was too cheap to buy and waiting for paperback.) The book is actually a reprint of the last third of "Quicksilver!" There is NOTHING on the cover to indicate this; it is sold and marketed as whole book. I might add that the paperback version of "Quicksilver" is actually only the first third of the hardcover. Again, nothing to indicate that buyers aren't getting the whole book. Paperbacks are usually a way for readers to enjoy a book that they didn't want pay for in hardcover. By breaking the original hardcovers into multiple paperbacks, Stephenson's publishers have figured out a way to charge MORE for the series. I hope this isn't a trend in publishing. We'll see how long THIS review stays up!
