This detailed and carefully reasoned study of the domestic architecture of Mies van der Rohe is a landmark contribution to contemporary understanding of the great architect's work. It is devoted to a close analysis of Mies' residential architecture, built and unbuilt, from 1923 to 1951. Many of its conclusions are pertinent to the whole of Mies' output.

The book presents penetrating discussions of both the Concrete and the Brick Country House projects, two of the famous Five Projects of the 1920s which made Mies' early reputation; and, among others, the Lange and Esters Houses of 1927-1930; the Barcelona Pavilion and Tugendhat House of 1928-1930; and, in America, plans for a house in Wyoming for the Stanley Resors, and the Farnsworth House of 1946-1951. The analysis and the illustrations demonstrate a continuous development toward realization of the goal Mies himself described: "To bring Nature, houses and people into a higher unity."

The original German language edition accompanied an exhibition organized by the Kaiser Wilhelm Museum, Krefeld, in conjunction with the Mies van der Rohe Archive of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, on the occasion of the public opening of the restored Lange and Esters Houses, now owned by the Kaiser Wilhelm Museum. All of the works exhibited are reproduced in this volume. Dr. Tegethoff's text, based on extensive research in the Mies Archive and other sources, brings to light much new information on the origins of Mies's ideas, his working methods and relationships with clients, as well as the actual planning and structure of the houses.

Wolf Tegethoff is a member of the faculty of the Kunsthistorische Institut of the University of Kiel, Germany.

Doctor of interfaith Divinity and 18-year death midwife St. Pierre introduces the practice of assisting the dying as they transition from the physical world to the nonphysical. The book serves as a guide for professionals who frequently encounter death: nurses, hospice workers, etc., as well as those preparing to serve someone close to them during the last days. St. Pierre stresses the ability to sit with acceptance and love in the presence of pain and suffering and to honor the choices and belief systems of the patients. An Essential Read

I have had a long journey to becoming a death midwife, and this book is the epitome of what death birthing is about. It is highly sensitive, intuitive, and instructional for those on this path. The detail of spiritual preparation for this work is completely universal regardless of what one's outer beliefs are. I have not found any other book as saturated in truth and love aside from Dr. Lonnie Edwards' Spiritual Laws that Govern Humanity. This book must be the cornerstone of every death midwife's practice!

If you care for those who are dying, this is a must read

As a hospice Volunteer Coordinator, I am always looking for ways to improve care for my dying patients. I train people to sit vigil with patients and was looking for a book that focused on the spiritual aspect of caring for dying individuals - and I found it. This book was very helpful for me, and I appreciated that it was respectful of all different faiths. It gave good examples on how to incorporate prayer and other rituals to bring meaning to the end of life, and to provide comfort to patients and their families (and even to myself as I care for them).

I was very pleased with this book and definitely recommend it if you are in this line of work.

About the Author
Paul den Arend grew up in the Netherlands and has been travelling for most of his adult life. He studied art history in Salamanca, Spain, wrote reports for the Dutch Embassy in Santiago de Chile and studied Chinese in China. In between, he has been working as a tour guide. For many years he lived in Rome, Italy and guided groups of all backgrounds through the city. He has been a guide in the Vatican Museums, Saint Peter's and the Galleria Borghese, but he also loves to show groups around Sicily or Tuscany. His guidebooks reflect a profound love for the Eternal City and the many stories about its beautiful piazza's and landmarks.

A great book for those looking to see the Vatican from a tour guides point of view, the word Complete in the title is too strong, it covers only the highlights of a visit to the Vatican and given the repetitious and typo filled nature of the book it is clearly not written by an author or historian, but a witty tour guide.

About the Author
Meizhong Wang has been teaching electronics, physics, computing and maths at college level in Canada for 20 years. She has also taught Electric Circuits and Mandarin at universities in China and Canada, respectively. Meizhong and Lily Chow published the book Legends of Four Chinese Sages in 2007. Her latest work is a Chinese version of Sojourners in the North, which was written by Lily Chow and won the Jeanne Clarke Memorial Local History Award in Canada.

About the Author
Alistair MacLeod was born in North Battleford, Saskatchewan, in 1936 and raised among an extended family in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. He still spends his summers in Inverness County, writing in a clifftop cabin looking west towards Prince Edward Island. In his early years, to finance his education he worked as a logger, a miner, and a fisherman, and writes vividly and sympathetically about such work.

His early studies were at the Nova Scotia Teachers College, St. Francis Xavier, the University of New Brunswick and Notre Dame, where he took his Ph.D. He has also taught creative writing at the University of Indiana. Working alongside W.O. Mitchell, he was an inspiring teacher to generations of writers at the Banff Centre. In the spring of 2000, MacLeod retired from the University of Windsor, Ontario, where he was a professor of English.

He has published two internationally acclaimed collections of short stories: The Lost Salt Gift of Blood (1976) and As Birds Bring Forth the Sun (1986). In 2000, these two books, accompanied by two new stories, were published in a single-volume edition entitled Island: The Collected Stories of Alistair MacLeod. In 1999, MacLeod’s first novel, No Great Mischief, was published to great critical acclaim, and was on national bestseller lists for more than a year. The novel won the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award, the Dartmouth Book Award for Fiction, the Thomas Raddall Atlantic Fiction Award, The Trillium Award for Fiction, the CAA-MOSAID Technologies Inc. Award for Fiction, and at the Canadian Booksellers Association Libris Awards, MacLeod won for Fiction Book of the Year and Author of the Year. No Great Mischief was also a finalist for the Pearson Canada Reader’s Choice Award at The Word on the Street.

Alistair MacLeod and his wife, Anita, have six children. They live in Windsor.

My roots go back to that area , and it brings to mind very good memories of time spent there .

A heart warming celebration of life in the face of adversity

On the surface 'The Lost Salt Gift of Blood' appears preoccupied with tragedy and death. However, read a little deeper and one finds it to be very life affirming. The themes of family, traditions, relationships, death, isolation and endurance echo throughout the short stories. The thematic parallels are skillfully woven into the fabric of the novel, highlighting that indeed, no one story can stand alone. It is worth reading!

Story telling at its best

This is a collection of wonderful stories told by a master story teller in the old tradition. Unlike most other collections of stories these live in your ear. Most others live on the page. And these are truly American stories, but unlike anything you'll find in popular anthologies of contemporary North American short stories, because they reach far back into our immigrant consciousness in an elastic, unpretentious way. I choose Alistair MacLeod over John Updike any day to describe what it means to me to be American.

GOOD FOR BEGINNERS BUT BEWARE...

This book gives sound advice on only playing the two lowest house percentage bets, pass line and come line, but does a poor job of explaining the don't pass and don't come. It assumes that everyone is a "right bettor". The advice on setting strict loss limits is very valuable to most players who lack discipline. You will learn to preserve your bankroll if you strictly follow the author's advice to walk away when the rules say so. It's not easy. My main criticism is that the suggested session money is way too low for the style of play suggested. It leaves too much freedom for undisciplined players. The power betting schedule is way too aggressive for most players. Once you get into the betting progression, taking double odds on 4-10's calls for way too much money at risk. This is reckless money management. You might break the bank once in a while, but you'll lose a huge bet on the inevitable 7-out at the end of that hot roll. There are smarter ways to manage even a very hot shoot. And there are better books on craps.

Excellent betting strategies

The power betting strategy is pays for the book probably thousands of times over. What puzzled me was the absolutely irrelevant information about "scooters" and "sliders" that followed. First half of the book was great....the rest killed time on the 5 hour flight back from Vegas. I wish I had read it going out!!!

Good teaching and "bet strategy" tool for a tempting game

This book is a good learning tool for both betting technique AND proper betting amounts for the exciting game of craps. The "Power Betting Strategy" is great! If you follow it, your losses will always be small, and your wins can be potentially quite lucrative. The only problem with the book is all of its incredibly irrelevant "information" AFTER all of the solid teaching, descriptions and betting strategy. That's why I give it a "7" and not something higher.
