Almost identical to Alexander's Care of the Surgical Patient...

As a surgical technology student, I was excited to find this book on Amazon. (I already own a copy of Alexander's Care of the Patient in Surgery, but I thought a book geared towards surgical technologists would be especially helpful). I ordered it immediately.

It came in today, so I sat down with my copy of Care of the Patient and compared the two. I was extremely disappointed to see that they are nearly identical. CotP has more info overall. This book, Surgical Procedures, leaves out some of the surgical pharmacology information and changes the "Perioperative Nursing Considerations" in each chapter to "Surgical Technologist Considerations" which contains most of the same info, word-for-word, but leaves out details of patient monitoring, preoperative patient preparation, etc. It also leaves out "Sample Plan of Care" tables found in CotP. It does contain about one page per chapter of photos of surgical instruments that the nursing version does not contain, but the pictures are too small to see any details and be of much help. (There are already numerous photos of instruments in the nursing book). All the operative procedure descriptions are the same, with occasional re-wording on some of the steps.

The only things I can see in the Surgical Procedures book that the other book doesn't have is Surgical Technology Preference Cards (which are pretty much very generic lists for supplies typically used for any procedures in a particular specialty- hemostatic agents, drapes, drains and dressings- and never mentions any particular kinds for specific procedures) and at the end of each chapter is a short review of about 10-20 questions.

If you already have a copy of Alexander's Care of the Patient In Surgery, then this is a waste of money. If you don't have a copy of it, then it is cheaper than this book (currently about $20 cheaper, though that may change) and has more information. I am giving this book 4 stars because it is a very good book, but not 5 stars because it is a lot of repeated information. I actually prefer Care of the Patient in Surgery because it gives me information not found in my textbook (Surgical Technology for Surgical Technologists), and any info in Surgical Procedures that is not in Care of the Patient, seems to be in my textbook (or in the Surgical Instrumentation book that was required for my class).

School suggested we get this one. I already had Alexander's Surgical Patient. They are almost, so don't spend the money for both of them.

Good, but not what I expected

As a surgical technology student, I expected this book to be exactly what I needed to write my surgical procedure papers. Although this book does offer a variety of great information, it lacked in some areas. I think as a working professional this book will come in handy to use as a reference book to look up procedures or to refresh on procedures that I may be out of practice on. This book is wrote for someone who has a decent knowledge base of the surgery and won't serve well for those who do not.

An excellent method of choosing the right CPI methodolgy to solve quality problems.

Dr. Plenert has taken the plethora of tools, methods, and philosophies surrounding Continuous Process Improvement and offered the reader an intelligent guide to understanding how to integrate these in a way that helps solve problems, and develop a sound approach to improving their business. Dr. Plenert has that rare combination of academic intellect coupled with practical, hands on experience. His understanding of the various tools and methods comes, not from an academic point of view, but from his years of experience helping organizations improve and position their business for success in this highly competitive global economy.

Part I of the book present a high level view of Continuous Process Improvement, Part II discusses the various CPI options available, Part III discusses execution and Part IV stresses the need for continuous improvement in today's highly competitive market. Through the flow of the book the reader learns how to distinguish the attributes of the various CPI methodologies, then to compare these methodologies when trying to solve a particular quality problem; choosing the right tool or tools to apply.

Should be titled "the book of quality-related lists." Pages and pages dedicated to buzzword after buzzword, list after list after list. I think the real purpose of this book is to encourage one to hire quality consultants because the continuous process improvement arena is a maelstrom of ideas, tools, processes, etc. This is most definitely not a "how to" book.

Good MBA read

Required reading for an MBA class I took. They don't dumb things down too much and help make sense of the concepts. I really enjoy process improvement so this book was a good read in my opinion. Very relatable examples and simple to understand concepts. This is a good read for someone who is either interested in Continuous Process Improvement or a teacher who is looking for a text for a class. I feel that we all got our moneys worth with this text.

to see other minor books rated better than this book is a fraud or a gang up to bolster certain books rather than others with disservice for us users in MMO.
if you want to have a complete knowledge of GI pathology this 2 volumes are a must
Can t believe you can have for less than 100 dollars while books consisitng of incomplete atlases ir biopsy ones or only medical non oncological or viceversa sell for more than 200 dollars!! something is wrong in America but now you know.

Superb, representing a complete update of the 'classic' 1st edition of this seminal work.
The quality of some of the photomicrographs is less than perfect.
However, the excellent, clinically relevant text makes up for this minor irritation.

Born in Tupelo, Mississippi, Presley was a contradiction, flamboyant in pegged black pants with pink stripes, yet soft-spoken, respectfully courting a decent girl from church. Then he wandered into Sun Records, and everything changed. "I was scared stiff," Elvis recalled about his first time performing on stage. "Everyone was hollering and I didn't know what they were hollering at." Girls did the hollering - at his snarl and swagger. Williamson calls it "the revolution of the Elvis girls." His fans lived in an intense moment, this generation raised by their mothers while their fathers were away at war, whose lives were transformed by an exodus from the countryside to Southern cities, a postwar culture of consumption, and a striving for upward mobility. They came of age in the era of the 1954 Brown vs. Board of Education ruling, which turned high schools into battlegrounds of race. Explosively, white girls went wild for a white man inspired by and singing black music while "wiggling" erotically. Elvis, Williamson argues, gave his female fans an opportunity to break free from straitlaced Southern society and express themselves sexually, if only for a few hours at a time.

Great Story Untold

I wish I could write a more favorable review. I can tell a lot of research went into this book and the writer, Joel Williamson, does a good job with organization and transitions (with one exception, below). The Vine copy is without any photos, not even on the cover--and no space where they would be placed--so it is hard to gauge the effect of photos when combined with text. That said, to paraphrase Don Rumsfeld, you review the book you have, not the book you wish you had.

It's too bad this book is good in some things but misses so much that I wish it had. There seems so little about Elvis Presley in it, who he really was, what he wanted, what he felt, his feelings and ideas about the music. It seems so disproportionately about him getting female audiences worked up on stage and then going to bed with a lot of women off-stage, but it's just not that interesting to read about. I didn't see any original research or even much from others who were important to him (women, roadies, musicians, Sam Phillips, Colonel Parker...anyone).

And I wish this book told me much more about the music and how Elvis brought something new into it all. Somewhere, too, (not just an occasional glimpse) would be the corrosive influence of Colonel Parker, his manager, who epitomized the bad side of the American Dream--the greed--and shaped Elvis to be a cash cow first, an artist...somewhere much further down the line. Williamson says that "Elvis didn't record anything good after 1958" but he doesn't really go into why that was the case, or how his manager didn't care at all about promoting his talent, just about getting his share of the easy money. That was such a tragedy.

I liked the observation that Elvis' Mississippi area had given America its "greatest entertainer (Presley), greatest playwright (Tennessee Williams) and greatest writer (William Faulkner)." And Williamson's emphasis on the influence of the South on Elvis is interesting, too, particularly for those of us unfamiliar with it, especially in the turbulent times of the 1950s and 1960s. But there's not enough about musical influences and styles, about playing and performing as a group and then as a solo artist. And there's too much, for me, even in the early years about all the audiences and their sexual desires and all the women that Elvis was bedding. I'm sure it could be written about interestingly, but I just found it to be too much and not interestingly written about at all. More to the point, the writing in general seems very textbook-ish in style, without bringing in a lot of facts or insights. There aren't a lot of quotes and there's not a lot of dialogue. Those things help liven up a biography. Here, I didn't really have a sense of anyone as a real person.

For a biography, that leaves a stilted feeling and one that was compounded (for me, at least) by not getting a feeling of what ELVIS felt and thought throughout his life. There's a narrative of events (including an odd chronological jump for several chapters, mid-story back to Elvis' childhood. One minute you're reading about him going into the Army in the late 1950s and the next, his father is talking about the war--but it's WWII and we're reading about Elvis' childhood. (Again, not much idea what he was thinking and feeling throughout it.)

Also, not to be unkind, but the Foreword (by the reader at the publishing house, Oxford University Press) does Williamson no favors in my opinion. This introduction dwells extensively on the idea of Presley's sexual appeal to his female audiences, far more than I think the book itself did, although that is a recurrent theme. That is certainly here, but there's more to Williamson's narrative than that, or than the well-known problems with drugs, weight and a group of hangers-on that didn't have his interests at heart.

I've always felt Presley was such a talent, not only his singing but the acting talent was there, too. Here, it was so sad how--just like Marilyn Monroe, another underrated actor with sex appeal--he kept trying to fight for good acting roles. (Unfortunately, once again, Colonel Parker gets away without the blame for destroying Presley's career that I think he should get. He was greedy and whatever could make him money--like Elvis starring in another cheesy beach musical--was what he cared about. If he had been interested in music--that great jazzy-bluesy-rockabilly music that Elvis started with and could have kept going into his "rock" and "gospel" years--"Elvis the Musician" wouldn't have done most of his best work by 1958. Similarly, if Tom Parker hadn't been motivated by personal gain, and had fought for good roles for him and shunned the cheap money-makers, Elvis might have been known as a great singer-actor, like Frank Sinatra or Bing Crosby of a different generation. He clearly had talent far beyond his peers in movies (Fabian, Pat Boone, Ricky Nelson, et. al). Unlike them, Elvis could really act.

I suspect the photographs will help (there should be a lot of them since their absence cuts the book's length by 50 pages), but without seeing them, I have no way to know. Judging on the text alone, which is what I have, I'd say this is well-researched and organized but pretty dry stuff with lots of mention about women he slept with, and not nearly enough about his personality, feelings, and most of all, his music.

Title ought to be "Elvis P***ed On My Wheaties"

The book is very well-written, meticulously researched, and definitely benefits from Williamson’s knowledge of how Southerners lived and thought during Elvis’s lifetime. The first half takes an objective, careful and thoughtful look at Elvis’s background, upbringing and early career. Williamson provides very interesting insights on why Elvis was considered vulgar, why the girls screamed and cried when he stepped on stage, and the intensity of their love for him, in terms of Southern culture.

Then it takes a turn, and the author loses his objectivity. Apparently, around the time Elvis makes his first television appearances, something about him turns Williamson off in a really big way and he never gets over it. I don’t question his facts, but he finds fault with just about everything Elvis does; even good things have a sinister motive.

In this book, Elvis is a talented singer who deserves his fame from 1955 to 1958, but rides that early fame for the rest of his useless life to a well-deserved early grave of his own making. He’s self-centered, insecure, cruel, thoughtless, ridiculous with money, inconsiderate with women, self-indulgent, a bad dresser, a terrible husband, a distant father, and not too bright.

No question, Elvis Presley was at least some, if not all, of those things, but I truly wish the author had stayed on track with his original theme – how the Southern culture influenced his behavior, actions, and decisions, even the bad stuff – rather than spend the last half of the book Elvis-bashing. That would have been worth reading.

If you number yourself among the legion of Elvis fans and remember "The King" in his heyday, "Elvis Presley: A Southern Life" may shatter your image of that man. If you remember Elvis Presley in his later years and harbor feelings of repulsion and disgust, Joel Williamson's biography of that legendary entertainer may help explain Elvis' actions and may evoke your sympathy for the man.

"Elvis Presley: A Southern Life" provides a perspective on his life and times that is not a common one. In this more scholarly work, Williamson integrates Elvis' responses and actions with the cultural mores and attitudes of the South and the social changes occurring in the post World War II United States to give readers a more balanced view of Presley's rise and fall. The influence of African-American musicians and Presley's own impoverished upbringing are explored, as are the backgrounds and influence of his parents. Joel Williamson does not gloss over the more seamy aspects of Elvis' early life, nor does Williamson attempt to glorify or denigrate Presley's later actions. Williamson does delineate the importance of Elvis Presley's music and attitudes with respect to the changing of attitudes toward race. He writes "...Elvis brought blacks and whites together as if there were no race line in America. He also significantly melted the lines that might divide generations and genders, and religions and classes in the nation ..."

Through the years and as Joel Williamson follows the progression of Elvis' life and career, the reader of "Elvis Presley: A Southern Life" begins to see a deterioration in both Elvis' morals, his music, and the type of individuals comprising the entourage with which he surrounded himself. Elvis exuded a sexual magnetism and energy, Ed Sullivan may have been prescient with his initial comments about and impression of Elvis. Further, in the time before social media, fans that elevated Elvis to "star" status were unaware of - what would be termed today - his sexual addiction and pedophilia. In "Elvis Presley: A Southern Life", Joel Williamson does not shy away from Elvis' darker propensities. Yet Williamson relates this information in a manner that is nonjudgmental and dispassionate.

The advanced reader's copy of "Elvis Presley: A Southern Life" had no photographs included on its pages. However, since it contains 333 pages and the publisher's edition 384, the difference is likely the addition of photographs. These should enhance the text markedly and add to the reader's appreciation of the scholarship that producing this work required.

"Elvis Presley: A Southern Life" is a work of which Joel Williamson can be proud. Readers who remember the youthful Elvis Presley and his music may find the pages of this book reveal facts and information that is distasteful and harsh. Readers who remember only the older, declining Elvis and his glitzy Vegas shows may find "Elvis Presley: A Southern Life" affirms their negative view of "The King". Regardless of the view to which you ascribe, you will find Joel Williamson's discerning biography of Elvis Presley well-written and one that handles some difficult subjects with skill and discretion. The combination of biography with the social, sociological, and cultural influences of the time, clearly showing their impact on the subject and his life, elevates this book above most biographies about Presley.

Informative, thought provoking and relevant

This book is a collection of addresses given by the Reverend Lloyd-Jones. He presents the puritan view of a wide range of issues relevant for the church today including revival, engagement with culture and the nature of the church. He also introduces us to the historical figures such as Whitfield, Owen and Edwards and briefly analyzes the historical development of the puritans and the methodists.
Reading the book shattered many of my assumptions, provoking me to ponder a perspective refreshingly different from much of the contemporary evangelical rhetoric. Learning of the faith of those who walked before us gives us a wider lens with which to critically examine our understanding of scriptures and our worldview. Also gone now from my thinking are the caricatures which society (and sadly, the church) use to malign these imperfect, yet Godly men. O, that we may recapture the passion and the single-mindedness for the glory of God exemplified by them.

Puritans: Their Origins and Successors

This 400 page book is a collection of transcribed addresses given at the annual Puritan Conferences in England from 1959 to 1978. Dr. Lloyd-Jones is quick to stress that the study of the Puritans must not be a merely academic exercise; otherwise we are in danger of lapsing into a barren intellectualism that is of no use at all. Instead, in each address he is concerned to show how the subject matter is relevant to the issues facing them in their day: issues of church-state relationship, unity in the church, and revival. He argues that Puritanism was not simply a concern about doctrine, but a "desire to carry the reform, which had already happened in the matter of doctrine, further into the nature and life and polity of the Christian church."

One example, drawn from his last address, on John Bunyan, illustrates how a study of the Puritans can be very relevant to our present day concerns. In his own day (the late 17th century) the nature of the church was a hotly disputed issue, even among the Puritans, who were certainly not of one mind here. Bunyan himself was a Separatist, meaning that he considered that the church consisted of visible saints. In this regard he stood opposed to the Roman Catholics, the Anglicans, and the Presbyterians. He also considered himself an Anabaptist, believing in baptism by immersion. However for him this issue was one of secondary importance. He argued that a believer already has that which baptism signifies, that being his participation in the death and resurrection of Christ. The sign, therefore, though important, should not be something that disrupts communion between Christians. For it is the thing that water baptism signifies that is important. Bunyan wrote these things and was strongly attacked in writing by some of his strict Baptist brothers. He held his ground but hated the controversy which he was convinced was over non-essentials, and so after responding to his critics he never mentioned the subject again. A reader of his "Pilgrim's Progress" would have no idea what his denominational affiliation was. A further testimony to the liberty which he believed in can be seen in the fact that though he himself was a believer in adult baptism by immersion, he had three of his children baptized in infancy.

Lloyd Jones' chapter on John Bunyan has certainly given me, who has struggled much over the question of baptism, much to think about. His discussions of John Knox, Jonathan Edwards, and others truly bring these distant Puritans to life and show how they are relevant to the issues we face in today's church.

This book is a collection of messages that were delivered by the now deceased Dr. D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones. Lloyd-Jones was a former pastor of Westminster Chapel and the key-note speaker of the Puritan and Westminster Conferences. These conferences ran from 1959-1978. This volume consists of nineteen messages.

The Conference began as interest in the writings of the English Puritans gained popularity amongst a group of students who were members of the Oxford Inter-Collegiate Christian Union. These students developed an interest in the writings of the Puritans, particularly John Owen and Richard Baxter.

There is no particular theme to this book. Therefore there is also no particular thesis to this book. Each message has its own theme and thesis.

There is no means or method of development as such since this again is not a book, but a collection of messages.

I found each message to be interesting and informative. I enjoyed reading them and actually learned quite a bit. Lloyd-Jones chose topics of interest, value, and historical significance to speak on during these conferences. The publishers chose nineteen of the best of these addresses for this collection.

David Martyn Lloyd-Jones (20 December 1899 - 1 March 1981) was a Welsh Protestant minister, preacher and medical doctor who was influential in the Reformed wing of the British evangelical movement in the 20th century. For almost 30 years, he was the minister of Westminster Chapel in London.

I heartily recommend this book to any reader. The wide variety, careful preparation, intelligence, and wit of Dr. Lloyd-Jones makes this a great read for anyone.

Real info on the Real Deal

This book isn't for everyone. However, if you're seriously interested in producing for COMMERCIAL theater, this is THE book. It's full of useful, pertinent info, and is a guide to and insight into some of the top players in the exhilirating world of commercial theater. As a playwright, I learned a lot -- including a definite sense that I am NOT the one to produce my own musical.

This book is an exciting read for anyone who has ideas for plays and musicals, but is unsure how to get them produced. It gives practical informations in a way that makes it "user friendly". I highly recommend this book for anyone with unheard ideas for the stage!!!

If you thought King Kong was the only monster who has laid claim to the Empire State Building, guess again. This highly entertaining, well-researched volume about the all-out, high-stakes battle in the 1980s and '90s over ownership and control of one of Manhattan's premier edifices is a cross between great business writing and even greater gossip. Built in 1929, the Empire State Building was bought in 1961 by Henry Helmsley and Lawrence Wein, who quickly resold it but retained a 114-year lease. When the Helmsley empire began to crack in the late 1980s (wife Leona went to jail for tax fraud), the building was nearly bought by jailed Japanese investor Hideki Yokoi, who used his illegitimate daughter, Kiiko Nakahara, and her husband, Jean-Paul Renoir, as fronts. When that deal fell through, Nakahara and Renoir secretly bought the building themselves, entering a deal with Donald Trump to try to shake the Helmsley lease. After Nakahara and Renoir were jailed in France in 1996 for the alleged theft of real estate, Trump and Leona Helmsley entered into a gigantic legal and public relations battle for control of the building. Pacelle, who writes for the Wall Street Journal, is scrupulous in detailing the legal angles and how shifts in world economy and U.S. business both affected and were affected by all this skullduggery. He also has great fun with the bizarre cast of characters, who plot and connive against one another in what reads like a cross between film noir and a Harold Robbins novel. Although New York City's Empire State Building is no longer the tallest building in the world, it unquestionably stands tall in the hearts and minds of the legions of tourists who flock to it each day. How did this building enter the realm of pop-culture iconography? Empire, a much-needed chronicle of the most famous skyscraper in the world, answers that question and more. Pacelle, who covered the recent ownership struggle for the building in the Wall Street Journal, describes its allure, indicating how it has become the ultimate prize in the commercial real estate ownership sweepstakes, possibly in the world. An eccentric Japanese billionaire, Hideki Yokoi, and various members of his extended family feature prominently in the scenario, but the cast of characters also includes such real estate tycoons as Donald Trump and Leona Helmsley. Although the story (and litigation trail) can get a bit complicated, it's vividly told and often gripping, evoking the best and worst in all of the participants. More history of the building and a clearer ownership schematic would have been helpful, but Pacelle clearly delivers the goods. Highly recommended for larger public libraries. Buildings Replace Paintings

When Japan was enjoying the height of its economy members of their super rich went on buying sprees that will remain legendary for both their scope and their questionable judgment. For a time landmarks and trophy properties were being purchased by Japanese investors from the beaches of Hawaii to downtown Manhattan. There was a certain unease expressed by some in this country that too much was being sold to a handful of foreign investors. For those who followed most of these acquisitions the only aspect that was more spectacular than the absurd prices that were paid, was the speed with which the buildings were either abandoned in bankruptcy procedures, or sold back to American owners for a fraction of what had been paid a few short years earlier.
Rockefeller Center was a 1.4 billion dollar loss to creditors; Pebble Beach Golf Course was taken back by banks and resold for approximately 50 cents on the dollar. Beachfront hotels in Hawaii fell into disrepair as the economy in Japan crumbled when their stock market fell some 44 percent almost overnight, and has still come nowhere near to recovering. The other willingness to spend without any regard for value was on art, primarily that of the great impressionists. The market both simultaneously hit its high and began dying in the three days one Tokyo businessman paid almost 80 million for a Van Gough, and then set the all time record for a painting a day later when buying a Renoir for 82.5 million. Both paintings were repossessed by the auction houses that sold them for non-payment, so whether they truly set records is open to debate. Even the third highest amount paid for a painting, some 50+ million, again a Van Gough, which was bought by an Australian, was again repossessed for failure to pay, and eventually sold to The Getty Museum in California for a number rumored to be half what it brought at auction.
Until I read, "Empire", by Mitchell Pacelle I thought that the "enthusiasm" that drove these purchases had ended, not unlike the dot.com hysteria our markets created and then destroyed. However Mr. Yokoi was to carry through the 1990's the same financially unjustifiable buying that his countrymen had been destroyed by earlier. In the process he and two other family members spent time in jail, and ultimately his unusual family was left in the same devastated state as the financial assets he once held.
Placing a value on the baseball that was the 70th homerun ball is purely subjective. The same case can be made for art; a given piece is worth what a given individual will pay on a given day. Real estate, especially commercial real estate has very defined methodologies for determining value, for determining the return a buyer or buyers are willing to accept. Oversimplified, an entity that is buying a piece of real estate is buying the income that it is producing, and what it is reasonably expected to produce in a definable future. When an investor makes a purchase the return expected and the risk taken are key elements in any rational decision.
The focus of the book includes residential homes that were bought as well as The Empire State Building. Residential real estate is again defined primarily by what a willing and capable buyer will spend, and in the case of the buying this man did based only on pictures of homes that resided in countries he had never visited, suffice to say the deals were all questionable and many were marked by no thought at all.
The New York Landmark clearly was a textbook example of emotional behavior. The building itself and the land it sits on is own by one group of people. The right to "occupy" the entire building is owned by two people until the year 2076. The rent they pay the owners of the building would give Mr. Yokoi about a 2.5 percent return on his money, or about the same as a checking account. Had he bought Treasury Bills of The US, he could have made double that return with zero risk. The real mind bender comes when one reads that those who hold the lease until 2076, NEVER have an increase in the rent they must pay; it actually goes down for a significant portion of the lease! Take into account inflation or net present value of the value of money in decades to come, and the only real income is the psychic value an owner feels from owning the property. One of the two holders of that lease is none other than Leona Helmsley, a woman not known for her diplomacy and for playing well with others. The quotes attributed to her in this book would make a longshoreman blush.
None of the family members/friends that made these deals were competent to do so. I have or hold several real estate licenses, and not one of these people could have passed the state exam for New York, however they were negotiating on their own for The Empire State Building! As I mentioned, the destruction of this family is a major part of the tale. The travails include the Patriarch Mr. Yokoi spending almost 3 years in a Japanese Jail, his daughter spending a similar time either in a French Prison or confined to France, and her husband spent over 3 years in a US Prison. All of these incarcerations occurred while the battle for control of this building was taking place.
If my comments sound like a stretch, they are mild in comparison to what all of the details of this folly entailed. As you read this book, at some point you will be reminded of P.T. Barnum and his famous take on people, "there is one born every minute".

Truth is Stranger than Fiction

Similar to the way the untimely deaths of Elvis and Marilyn helped elevate their status from celebrity to icon, the World Trade Center in the aftermath of the terrorist attack of September 11 seems well on its way to attaining an iconographic stature it never had while it stood. Take a walk through mid-town this holiday season and survey the street-vendors' wares. Twin Tower memorabilia predominates in a way it hasn`t in the past, most notably in souvenir photographs of New York's skyline. Yet those towers, the tallest of the Manhattan skyline (and briefly the tallest in the world), never defined the skyline in the hearts and minds of New Yorkers (or the worldwide community) in the way the Empire State Building has over the past seventy years. The warmth of the Empire State Building's limestone facade, the grace of its tapered silhouette, the romance of its history (both real and imagined) combine to create an allure that the boxy glass and steel towers could not match.
That history is presented in "Empire, A Tale of Obsession, Betrayal, and the Battle for an American Icon," Mitchell Pacelle's biography of the world's most famous skyscraper, and the book skillfully delivers all that its long title promises. The framework is the decade-long battle waged in the Nineties for ownership and control of the building, but there are ample asides that chronicle its entire history. The cast of players include unscrupulous Japanese billionaire Hideki Yokoi, double-crossed by his daughter and son-in-law, Kiiko Nakahara and Jean-Paul Renoir, who claimed Yokoi gave Nakahara the building as a gift; real estate magnate Harry Helmsley and his partner Lawrence Wein and their heirs, Peter Malkin and the reviled Leona Helmsley, who hold a 114 year lease on the property; and Donald Trump, determined to break that lease.
This is a big story about a big building, a big family, big fortunes, big egos and big deals. There are occasions when the details of the deals become confusing (like a set of nesting Russian dolls there are holding companies within holding companies within still more holding companies), but by and large the book is a page turner. "Empire" reads like fiction, except that if it were fiction you'd probably never believe it. The Leona parts are a particularly sinful pleasure, but read it without guilt. This is a well-researched and documented account by a respected reporter of The Wall Street Journal.

Tawdry, Tarnished--But The Best

I bought "Empire" with the mistaken idea it would be a history of the building: its conception, construction and history. There is some of that but the main thrust is the Art of the Deal: the chicanery, foolishness, cleverness and mind boggling intrigue of the fools, visionaries, and rascals who see the ownership of the Empire State Building as the jewel in their crown, the Nirvana of a real estate deal.
The Grand Old Lady is a bit worse for wear, only second tier desirability office rental space, lacking in security and a tad rat infested, but like a true Cleopatra, drives men mad with desire to own her.
Investigative journalist, Mitchell Pacelle, does a fine job unraveling the bizarre cast of characters who have tried to nail down ownership, particularly in the last dozen years. Hideki Yokoi, an elderly disgraced Japanese billionaire designated his illegitimate daughter Kiiko to be his emissary and agent in the huge purchase. Kiiko is either a dragon lady or a submissive flower of a daughter and wife to the mysterious James Bondian Jean-Paul Renoir, who is a great businessman, crook, or fall guy; take your pick. You could never make fictional characters out of these people; no one would believe you.
On the American front was real estate titan Lawrence Wien, who had a sweetheart 114-year lease on the building. I treasured Mr. Wien because, though very rich, he seemed---well, normal. Partners with Mr. Wien were Harry and the dreaded Leona Helmsley. Multiply everything by ten you have read regarding the Queen of Mean, and you have Leona as she appears in this book. Last but certainly not least, is Donald Trump, the one and only. Donald, who never had one thin dime of his own money invested in the takeover caused merry havoc for over ten years. I had to admire him for two reasons 1) he loathes Leona and never let an opportunity pass to rile and discomfit her, and 2) he structured such a deal, he might have ended up kingpin without a particle of risk on his part.
Mr. Pacelle does an excellent job of taking us through this maze of perfidity, and illustrates very well the spell cast by the wooing and winning the Empire State Building. Well researched and a good read. Recommended.
