A Face to the World: On Self-Portraits, by Laura Cumming

Focusing on the art of self-portraiture, this effortlessly engaging exploration of the lives of artists sheds fascinating light on some of the most extraordinary portraits in art history. Self-portraits catch your eye. They seem to do it deliberately. Walk into any art gallery and they draw attention to themselves. Come across them in the world's museums and you get a strange shock of recognition, rather like glimpsing your own reflection. For in picturing themselves artists reveal something far deeper than their own physical looks: the truth about how they hope to be viewed by the world, and how they wish to see themselves. In this beautifully written and lavishly illustrated book, Laura Cumming, art critic of the Observer, investigates the drama of the self-portrait, from Durer, Rembrandt and Velazquez to Munch, Picasso, Warhol and the present day. She considers how and why self-portraits look as they do and what they reveal about the artist's innermost sense of self -- as well as the curious ways in which they may imitate our behaviour in real life. Drawing on art, literature, history, philosophy and biography to examine the creative process in an entirely fresh way, Cumming offers a riveting insight into the intimate truths and elaborate fictions of self-portraiture and the lives of those who practise it. A work of remarkable depth, scope and power, this is a book for anyone who has ever wondered about the strange dichotomy between the innermost self and the self we choose to present for posterity -- our face to the world.

Review
'Deserves a place of honour on every art lover's shelf!Tenderly, creatively written, jargon- and waffle-free, the book wears deep learning with an unaffected grace but touches!on truths beyond the protocols of art criticism.' Boyd Tonkin, Independent 'Intelligent, humorous, swinging freely between erudition and colloquialism. I immediately found myself at home in this book, feeling as though I'd been reading and thinking about this subject all my life.' Jonathan Coe 'Positively fizzes with ideas; just about every single paragraph contains a fresh observation' Nick Hornby, Observer, Books of the Year 'A literary as well as an artistic triumph' David Cox, Evening Standard, Books of the Year 'Laura Cumming combines great clarity of style with a wide range of taste. All aspiring critics of any art form should take a look at how much she can say in a short space.' Clive James 'A beautiful and intriguing book!though Cumming's book is stacked with visual masterpieces, it is her writing that most claims admiration. She notices every detail in a painting, the way a carpet folds, the varying textures in a dog's fur, and registers them with a poet's precision!she relies on keen observation, linguistic power and lots of knowledge. It adds up to the most enjoyable art book I have read for years' John Carey, Sunday Times

This is a wonderful book. It is well written and very informative
By jk
This is a wonderful book. It is well written and very informative, providing an interesting perspective on the subject. There are many illustrations, often large and in color. A number of reviewers have commented that some of the paintings the author discusses are not in the text. This is in fact true but I was able to find all of them on the internet without any dificulty

excellent, well organized book where the words are as important as the pictures
By will's mom
this book is mentioned in Nick Hornby's "More baths, less talking" really, how would we find it otherwise? but that would be a loss, this is a book that is worth every minute that you devote to it.

Five stars for the text, two at most for the illustrations
By Ralph Blumenau
I have always been fascinated by self-portraits, and so was delighted by the appearance of this book. Laura Cumming is a minute observer: her descriptions of the paintings have alerted me to many details of paintings of which I had previously been unaware. How many viewers of Van Eyck's Van der Paele Madonna, for example, would have noticed the portrait of (presumably) the artist in the tiny reflection on the armour of the attendant St George? The book has a detail of this passage in the painting, but the matt illustration is so muddy that it is completely useless and I had to go to Google Images to find a more readable version of it.

The illustrations are the weak part of the book, and some are really poor, for you cannot see many of the details to which the author refers: the glove which Sofonisba Anguissola is carrying or the important key tucked into the belt of Velasquez in Las Meninas; nor can you make out the cat and the dog at the bottom of Gumpp's self-portrait. In the reproduction of Carracci's, you can just about make out the dog, but not `the spectral cat'. The illustration of Kahlo's `The Wounded Deer' is cropped so that the word `Carma', referred to in the text, is lost. Also, increasingly so as the book proceeds, Cumming discusses a number of self-portraits by lesser-known artists, which are not illustrated at all (and are not available on Google Images either); and there are some paintings which she describes without giving their titles, so those cannot be looked up on Google anyway. That's all more than a little frustrating.

But the text is immensely rewarding. We learn such fascinating details as that the flowers in the mirror of Seurat's `La Poudreuse' were painted over what was originally a self-portrait, and Cumming's reflections on this are charming. Many fine essays have been written on Rembrandt's self-portraits, and, unavoidable as it is in a such a book, it cannot have been easy to produce another one; but she rises creditably to that challenge also. About the other great serial self-portraitist, Van Gogh, she argues eloquently that the pity they evoke is purely ours, and that there is no self-pity in the pictures themselves or in Van Gogh's mind.

There are fine passages about how artists have portrayed their hands, and about the transition from the painters' busy workshops to their cell-like studios, as part of the story of Romanticism. Cumming's analysis of Philip Guston's `Studio' is a real tour de force; and there is a lovely analysis of a triple self-portrait by Norman Rockwell. The penultimate chapter, entitled `Falling Apart', shows how photography especially (but inspiring the work of painters also) can show the multiple aspects and/or masquerades of an artist's Self, or indeed convey the sheer elusiveness of what we mean by the Self: a very post-modern theme.

These are just a few of the many felicitous passages in Cumming's text. You may not in every case agree with her reactions and interpretations, but they are always worth thinking about; and what is irrefutable is the acuity of her perceptions, the range of her knowledge, the philosophical dimension of her thoughts, and her intense engagement with her subject.

Review
"Beyond the Ashes... builds bridges among secular, political, and metaphysical realms. The seemingly effortless way in which Rabbi Gershom accomplishes so monumental a task pays tribute to the depth of knowledge and wisdom that was born of having transcended the very ashes of which he writes." -- Amy Shapiro, Journal of Regression Therapy, 1994

"He [Gershom] is certainly a dynamic force to be reckoned with, bringing, as he does, many new ideas and concepts to the subject of reincarnation." -- Roy Stemman, editor,

"He [Gershom} is a sensitive counselor and spiritual healer, endowed with the understanding of dreams and visions, and a channel for the healing wisdom of the archetypal Tree of Life." -- Rabbi Zalman Schachter, from the cover

"Rabbi Gershom addresses the Jewish traditional beliefs about the afterlife, all of which are important perspectives to be aware of for those willing to explore metaphysical issues... His presentation is compelling." -- Carole Clarke, Assn. for Past Life Research and Therapies (APRT) Newsletter, 1996

A Compelling and Compassionate Work
By Richard Salva
I highly recommend this book-but I warn you, it isn't an easy one to read. This is a Holocaust study-with the same gruesome imagery described by Primo Levi and others-but related by dozens of people. And all the memories originate in past lives and their sudden ends.

Rabbi Gershom is a compelling and compassionate writer. He tells an engaging story of himself becoming the unplanned recipient of these dramatic past-life recollections. He seems a worthy vessel of such privileged information-honest, humble, and caring-if you or I had similar terrible secrets to share, we might pick someone like him to tell them to.

A fascinating aspect of this report-and one that lends it validity-is that so many of the people who recalled these Holocaust deaths had no cultural basis to support them. Many are Gentiles in this life, but brought forward the beautiful Jewish rituals and customs as well as the far-less-pleasant flashbacks.

One especially valuable chapter is a meditation on Healing the Karma of the Holocaust. There are a number of interesting ideas that branch out from the central concept of this book-the possibility, for instance, that many who died during WW II are reincarnating now-and Rabbi Gershom gives them all thoughtful consideration.

Through the Holocaust, Hitler and his henchmen succeeded for a time in bringing hell on earth. And yet, as I read this book, I saw a light shining in the darkness. Here were hundreds of those murdered innocents, alive once more, telling their stories. If these reports are true, then, in the deepest sense, the Nazi "experiment" of Jewish liquidation was an utter failure. Not only did they not extinguish the light of Judaism, but they failed ultimately to extinguish the individuals they killed, too.

At any rate, if you can handle the subject matter, Beyond the Ashes offers a vision of soul-expansion and healing, and I urge you to give it a try.

Classic read in the rebirth literature
By Mark
This is not a perfect book, but adds greatly to reincarnation literature in general. It is rather quirky, but the breadth and the issues discussed ability to allow thoughtful reflection makes up for any of its limitation.

It is also interesting to me that other blond Nordic types believe they had perished in their last life in this recent European tragedy. Though I haven't taken advantage of his services, I believe the Rabbi author provides a cost effective therapy for individuals who fall in the above category!

Doesn't deliver what the title promises
By Opal 88
This book starts out well. Seems like it will deliver what the title promises, then completely fails. By the end it becomes an attempt to convert the reader to Judiasm. I still don't know much about cases of Reincarnation from the Holocaust.

Europe Central, by William T Vollmann

A daring literary masterpiece and winner of the National Book Award.

In this magnificent work of fiction, acclaimed author William T. Vollmann turns his trenchant eye on the authoritarian cultures of Germany and the USSR in the twentieth century to render a mesmerizing perspective on human experience during wartime. Through interwoven narratives that paint a composite portrait of these two battling leviathans and the monstrous age they defined, Europe Central captures a chorus of voices both real and fictional— a young German who joins the SS to fight its crimes, two generals who collaborate with the enemy for different reasons, the Soviet composer Dmitri Shostakovich and the Stalinist assaults upon his work and life.

From Publishers Weekly
In the small set of America's best contemporary novelists, Vollmann is the perpetual comet. Every two years or so he flashes across the sky with another incredibly learned, incredibly written, incredibly long novel. Two years ago, with Argall, he easily bested John Barth in the writing of 17th-century prose while taking up the tired story of the settlement of Jamestown and making it absolutely riveting. His latest departs from his usual themes--the borders between natives and Westerners, or prostitutes and johns--to take on Central Europe in the 20th century. "The winged figures on the bridges of Berlin are now mostly flown, for certain things went wrong in Europe...." What went wrong is captured in profiles of real persons (Kathe Kollwitz, Kurt Gerstein, Dmitri Shostakovich, General Paulus and General Vlasov) as well as mythic personages (a shape-shifting Nazi communications officer and creatures from the German mythology Wagner incorporated into his operas). Operation Barbarossa--the German advance into Russia in 1941, and the subsequent German defeat at Stalingrad and Kursk--is central here, with the prewar and postwar scenes radiating out from it, as though the war were primary, not the nations engaged in it. The strongest chapter is a retelling of Kurt Gerstein's life; Gerstein was the SS officer who tried to warn the world about the concentration camps while working as the SS supply agent for the gas chambers. The weakest sections of the book are devoted to the love triangle between Shostakovich, Elena Konstantinovskaya and film director Roman Karmen. Throughout, Vollman develops counternarratives to memorialize those millions who paid the penalties of history. Few American writers infuse their writing with similar urgency.

From Bookmarks Magazine
Most critics praised Vollmann’s twelfth novel, paying homage to his ambitious yet capable grasp of the pivotal political and moral issues of the 20th-century. They hail his dazzling prose, sure command of history, innovation, and copious research, and they proclaim that Europe Central is one of his best (if not the best) works. Reviewers cast an indulgent eye on Europe Central’s shortcomings, though almost all bemoan the ponderous length of the novel and Vollmann’s predilection for hammering his main points ad nauseam. The critics agree: What kept Europe Central from being a tour de force was an editor willing to excise the excess.

From Booklist
"We have a Motherland and they have a Fatherland. Their child is Europe Central," muses one of the many sly narrators in this grand matrix of paired stories about moments of truth during the most brutal conflict of World War II, the war between Russia and Germany. Following his landmark opus on violence, Rising Up and Rising Down (2003), Vollmann, a master of synthesis and an intense and compassionate writer, presents an epic inquiry into the nature of conscience and survival in catastrophic times. His guiding light is the Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich, who managed to create works of profound elegiac beauty under the murderous censorship of Stalin's regime, and not only does Vollmann empathetically portray this controversial figure, he also emulates the rich drama of his music. In spite of the massiveness of this zealously researched creation (replete with 50 pages of notes), Europe Central is a work of compelling intimacy as Vollmann imagines the inner lives of individuals caught up in an orgy of hate, fear, and apocalyptic violence. Here are provocative portraits of the German artist Kathe Kollwitz; the revered Russian poet Anna Akhmatova; translator Elena Konstantinovskaya, whom Vollmann casts as the love of Shostakovich's tormented life; and the "spy for God," Kurt Gerstein, an SS officer who tries to tell the disbelieving world the truth about the Holocaust. Working, as is his wont, on a monumental scale that embodies the full complexity of the dilemmas and horrors he grapples with, Vollmann opens new portals onto a genocidal war never to be forgotten, and illuminates both the misery and beauty human beings engender. A towering and magnificent work of art!
By kobe8
It joins V. Grossman's Life and Fate - two works that illuminate WWII in the same way that War and Peace did the War of 1812
You cannot read one without the other.
It is that rare book that one finishes and takes a breath and then begins again.

Timely, Insightful, and Pynchon-esque
By Guy Rittger
First, "Europe Central" is not a work for those who need linear narrative structure - "plot" in the conventional sense - unambiguous authorial "voice", and all the trappings of popular, realist fiction. Vollmann writes in a stylistic mode that is simultaneously impressionistic and expressionistic - jarring "realist" imagery juxtaposed against swirling emotions that flow around, between and through the multitude of characterizations (not "characters") that populate the work. Readers unaccustomed to the styles of high modernist and post-modernist fiction such as the works of Thomas Pynchon, Antonio Lobos Antunes or Juan Goytisolo will find themselves struggling continually and probably find the novel impenetrable.

For the rest of us, "Europe Central" is a much-needed antidote to the American exceptionalist, "Good War" nostalgia that informs so many American accounts of the 20th century. The corollary of this perspective is to simultaneously anthropomorphize "Europe" and dehumanize "Europeans" in an attempt to contrast them unfavorably to "America" and "Americans". Indeed, this is precisely the discourse that we currently hear so frequently from various corners of our much-benighted country.

In this respect, "Europe Central" succeeds in many of the same ways that the recent film "Downfall" succeeds: i.e., by humanizing the protoganists of some of the world's most catastrophic events and forcing the reader / viewer to ask the question, "In similar circumstances would I have felt or acted any differently?"

What dismays many readers is precisely the discomfort of having to "read" through the authorial perspective of narrators whose moral positions are not clear-cut, who are compromised by their proximity to or intimate involvement in actions that "history" has labeled attrocities or war crimes. The present response of denial and disbelief of many Americans to U.S. military attrocities in Afghanistan and Iraq underscores this quite strongly.

Apart from the politics of "Europe Central" - which should not be construed in knee-jerk fashion as "leftist" or "fascist" (though it is interesting how the work will no doubt attract both epithets) - the novel is stylistically rich and exhibits the kind of virtuosity that is rarely encountered these days, at least in terms of the scope of Vollmann's intent.

I personally found the book both very difficult and very exhilirating to read. You may be an experienced reader but the unfamiliarity of the narrative terrain, the twists and turns, the strange background and place names, the polymorphous characterizations, the polysynchronic narrative structure, will all contribute to a challenging read.

I strongly recommend the book to readers who like to work hard at their reading. I also recommend it to those, like me, who find the current "America" / "American" realities disorienting and depressing.

Symphonies & tombstones
By John L Murphy
Having finished the book a few minutes ago, I must record my reactions. I spent the last few weeks in its passages--on and off, necessarily--it's an overwhelming monolith as forbidding as its 1935 "Deutschland, das Land der Musik" stylized eagle cover image. Yet, like the somber image, it attracts a certain reader curious to part the curtain and enter. This mythic structure towers over the individual, whether in the storylines or ourselves, wandering into a great labyrinth.

The blurbs summarize the plots, but a few overall reactions may let you know if this book may be worth the considerable effort and investment of time. I was pleased to see that in the sources appended to the text, Guy Sajer's outstanding memoir (which I've also reviewed for Amazon) The Forgotten Soldier is cited first of all. This account (which has been asserted by some to take liberties with fact) of an Alsatian fighting for the Germans on the Ostfront came often to mind as I read Vollmann. The author's scope and research simply is not the type we expect to find so evidently scaffolding even "historical fiction," and this involved me more in the result even as it distanced me from the conceit that I was listening to fully-realized narrators rather than, as Vollmann gives away in one footnote, a "fabulist."

The musical themes I found appropriate, but lacking knowledge of Shostakovich's ouevre, the exacting attention given to them left me floundering for long stretches of an already nearly endless work. (My wife was reading Anna Karenina simultaneously, and we kept pace with each other!) Unlike the earlier Russian writers, Vollmann's epic does not unfold so easily. Even with background knowledge of the conflicts (in no small part thanks to Sajer), the panoramas, like the Ostfront serving as the focus for so many scenes, astonish but diminish you as a reader, struggling to keep up with the events. Perhaps this reaction is intended by Vollmann as the appropriate response?

My favorite parts were those of Kurt Gerstein, Van Cliburn, Vlasov and Paulus, and Hilde Benjamin, the GDR's "Red Guillotine." Vollmann takes on a very intriguing narrative style imitating the leaden justifications of Soviet propagandists well for many vignettes, and his energy often seems more expended on the side of the USSR rather than the "German Fascist" entries, leaving the book a bit more lopsided than the design of paired stories would suggest. This probably, given the determinism of the Soviets as well as actual events, nonetheless may convey the force--in so many ways--of the Russian over the German ideology in the struggle for Europe Central--which tends to get overlooked, actually, in the novel in favor of the Russian steppes.

If you're somewhat familiar with the contexts already, this is in my opinion a fitting and challenging work that will force you to enter into the minds of people that you may have only glimpsed at a distance in grainy documentaries--this itself serves as one of many motifs--the humanity is less directly perceived than in more accessible, sentimentalized, or tidy novels.

Yes, the work needed an editor. A lesser author would have ironically earned another star! But a writer as intelligent as Vollmann should know that he needs to keep his reader in mind, and not expect us to labor for so long on what his labor needs to compress into a more comprehensible form. The Shostakovich-Elena-Karman triangle makes its point and encapsulates the question of "can art fight evil" well. But it goes on three times longer than needed in an already stuffed narrative that needed more concentration upon, say Zoya. The ties with the Nibelungenlied, Tristan, and the Germanic myth are excellent, but I think these could have been tightened and honed. You also sense that Stalingrad, Dresden, the gulags and lagers all are filtered through book-learning. Vollmann for all his impressive research tends to let it sit on the page as "facts that need to be made into fiction to make it a WWII story" rather than to incorporate what's been published as memoirs and first-hand interviews, say, into vividly rendered experiences transferred into the plight of his imagined protagonists.

For many authors, this would have been the work of a lifetime. For this prolific if admittedly prolix writer, (most of whose books I've gone on to review in late 2013/first half of 2014) it's an immersion that seems to have been, more or less effectively in parts rather than the whole--within who knows what shorter time. And what's Vollmann getting at in blaming "wartime paper shortages" for the lack of the supplement's chronology? Perhaps a sly relevance for us today?

Midlatitude Synoptic Meteorology: Dynamics, Analysis, and Forecasting, by Gary Lackmann

The past decade has been characterized by remarkable advances in meteorological observation, computing techniques, and data-visualization technology. However, the benefit of these advances can only be fully realized with the introduction of a systematic, applied approach to meteorological education that allows well-established theoretical concepts to be applied to modernized observational and numerical datasets.

This textbook links theoretical concepts to modern technology and facilitates the meaningful application of concepts, theories, and techniques using real data. As such, it will both serve those planning careers in meteorological research and weather prediction, and provide a template for the application of modern technology in a classroom and laboratory setting. Synoptic-dynamic meteorology, synoptically driven mesoscale phenomena, weather forecasting, and numerical weather prediction are covered in depth in this text, which is intended for undergraduates and beginning graduate students in the atmospheric sciences.

Meteorology Math for beginners
By S. Gould
For years I was searching for a meteorology text which would explain in simple terms the mathematical aspects of synoptic meteorology in terms that I could understand. This book has really helped me understand the mathematics behind the dynamics and forecasting that I have been using for 20 years.

Excellent book. Very applicable to synoptic scale forecasting.
By Paul McCrone
Excellent book. Very applicable to synoptic scale forecasting. Excellent treatment of dynamics. I am not sure why the author ordered the chapters the way he did - - I might suggest a couple other different ways to structure the material, which prevents it from being 5 stars, but it is still a good text.

This is a great textbook! Clear diction that is precise but avoids unnecessary jargon. I love that it's paperback, since it's still high quality but saves some money.

I LEARNED how to love
By the gardener
I am so grateful to the author of this book, Ken Keyes, jr., for teaching me ways of getting free of emotional upsets and even "that grey feeling" and breaking through to Unconditional Love and Oneness. When I first encountered Ken's system, I was an agnostic, and this system worked for me. Later, when I had the experiences and my vision of life transformed, I said to myself, "Oh, this is what they mean by God."

Ken has passed on now, and you would not know this by reading the book itself, but he was one of the most loving, joyful and creative people I ever met --- despite being a quadraplegic! He felt that his condition (caused by polio when he was 23 years old) predisposed him to learn what he could about using the mind to create the experience of happiness. He learned it, and he taught it in a way westerners - even agnostics - could learn without beliefs or years of meditation. It is a very practical system. Thank you, Ken!

It was in 1976 that I first read the Handbook and began practicing The Methods. I still use them every day. This is an extraordinary book.

The Living Love Way to Happiness and Highter Consciousness is a "Science of Happiness" which was formulated to contribute toward the great awakening now taking place throughout the world. As a system it is new - but many components that make up the Living Love Way have been tried and tested for thousands of years. This vision of the Living Love Way to happiness was made possible only by standing upon the shoulders of countless individuals who, in different places and times, have has insights into the causes of human happiness and unhappiness.

A must read for everyone
By Brasspiano
Ok, I have been reading New Age, self help and you name it for more than twenty years. This one book, honest to God, has done more for me than most of those. I read five pages of this a day and it keeps me on track. You'll have to get past his "hippy" language, and I think he means "Attachments" or "Pre-Conceived Notions" when he uses the word "Addiction." He doesn't use the word addiction the way we use it today to connotate a substance abuse. If you're familiar with the Eastern Chakra system -- use those to visualize when he talks about the "Security Center," (First Chakra); "Sensing Center" (Second Chakra); "Power Center" (Third Chakra); "Love Center" (Fourth Chakra), "Cornucopia Center" (Fifth Chakra), etc. He doesn't mention the Chakras but it certainly aligns with them. A must read, especially if you're stuck and need to break out of that.

It's a winner
By Elaine Biech
Lou has hit it out of the ballpark with this one. Everything and I do mean EVERYTHING a trainer--or anyone else for that matter--needs to know about project management from conception to completion is between these two covers. I read the pre-published copy, so I did not expect to enjoy it so much the second time. It was even a better! The graphics add clarity to a quick read helping you create a project charter, project schedule, post-project review and everything between. This book gets you started in the right direction and gives you the precision, competence, and confidence that will make your project a success. Lou Russell is the reigning queen of project management and this book is her crowning glory!

He was a remarkable man.
By Frank Bierbrauer
Once again David Bohm, one of the most original of thinkers, has demonstrated his ability to make original and fascinating discoveries in regard to, let us say, life in general. This is a combination of physics, biology, philosophy etc etc or as it used to be called natural philosophy. Bohm was one of this century's last remaining natural philospohers in a time of specialisation, in some ways akin to Robert Rosen, Darcy Thomson or Einstein all of whom were willing to expand their frontiers beyond their areas of specialisation. What singles Bohm out is his deep investigation of all aspects of thought especially the study of thought itself, its origin and dissolution and is human life possible without it, in other words is thought all there is or does being human mean a great deal more and other ?
In this short text Bohm looks at creativity, what it is, what it means in human life, how it works and various other aspects. Bohm, like in his other works, shys away from any form of solid definition, this is done on purpose, rather than because of a lack of understanding, Bohm insists that any form of thought, concept, idea which becomes crystalised as the "whole truth and nothing but the truth" interferes with the natural flow of reality which is ever changing and never static, this includes ideas as well which are insights about this flow (expanded on earlier in eg "Wholeness and the Implicate Order"). In this book he considers something he calls artamovement or "the art of fitting in the flow", here the word fit is in fact the meaning of art, in fact all forms of human endeavour are a form of art. This fitting in is the way people find out whether something is true or right in a context.
This, as usual, is highly original and especially true to itself, Bohm always writes what is true to itself and himself, he never, right until his dying day, failed to expound the truth whether he liked it or not. He epitomises the true seaker of knowledge which today is often smothered by individual desires, political expediency, domination from others or downright egotism. He was a remarkable man.

Science and Art
By Dorion Sagan
Consisting of four essays and an interview with Louwrien Wijers, On Creativity provides a clear window into the ruminations of physicist David Bohm. Author of a textbook on quantum mechanics, Bohm is best known for his speculations on "the implicate order," a world view which draws on quantum mechanics in an attempt to go behind colleague Niels Bohr's "Copenhagen Interpretation"-to wit, that the mathematics of quantum theory, which lead to paradoxes in the macroscopic realm, should not be construed as anything more than mathematical treatments that work. This view, or rather non-view, was not acceptable to Einstein. The basic solution of Bohm is to suggest that our entire three-dimensional reality, which shows evidence of nonlocality-the instantaneous measurable correlation of attributes of distant particles-is a projection of a deeper "enfolded" realm. These essays, however, with titles such as "On creativity," "On the relationships of science and art," "The range of imagination," and "The art of perceiving movement" are not overly recondite, abstruse, or abstract-let alone mathematical. In On Creativity, for example, Bohr analyzes what makes not just a great, but a truly original scientist, such as Newton and Einstein (with whom Bohm corresponded). Perhaps surprisingly, he includes Helen Keller and her teacher Anne Sullivan in their company. The reason has to do with Bohm's emphasis on an open-minded attitude, free of worldly obsessions such as career advancement or "kicks," that allows the truly creative mind to bust through societal blinders and see the world as a whole in a new way. In the case of Sullivan she exposed Keller, deaf and blind from birth, to water in a variety of settings, writing the word on her hand. At a given point, Keller, who was animalistic before, put the different stimuli together, seeing their underlying unity. This is the kind of unity that Bohr argues Newton discovered in his realization that planets, like apples, fall-only much more slowly-a view that dispensed with the prevailing notions of the Greeks, who distinguished between the perfection of the celestial, and the imperfection of the earthly realm. Einstein went further, showing that seemingly equidistant and simultaneous times and places really depended upon the relationship of observers to observed. What is wonderful about Bohm is that he is deeply immersed in and respectful of, art and philosophy and religion. A close friend of Krishnamurti, he relates the work of Hegelian philosophy and Coleridgian poetics to scientific inquiry; he says he personally was inspired by artists. For example, in the essay, "The Range of Imagination," he attempts to link art to science by starting with Owen Barfield's analysis of Coleridge's distinction between two kinds of imagination-primary imagination and fancy. Although they are linked-mutually implicated is as everything else in Bohm's implicate universe-the primary imagination is much more than just putting things together in pleasing shapes. Perhaps the single biggest insight in this book, which everywhere battles what Bohm considers to be the deleterious effects of fragmentation (and mediocrity, conformity, and "the mechanical") in thinking, is his emphasis that, in great art, no less than great science, the truth is not necessarily what is liked. The truth is what we find *whether we like it or not*--and this scientific spirit needs to apply to art as well. In a way, however, this brilliant exposition creates a contradiction for Bohm, as he elsewhere identifies the true with the beautiful (in large part due to the aesthetic criterion of elegance for choosing among competing world views and mathematical theories). The book might also be criticized for being stylistically bland even as it sings the praises of art, as well as perhaps politically naive in tracing human malaise to an abstraction so great as "the fragmentary." Nonetheless, this work is highly recommended for its analysis of the fascinating, still woefully underexplored terrain connecting art and science.
