Very Practical Guide!

I attended a workshop facilitated by one of the authors, Judith Perle, and wanted to read the book to reinforce what I learned. I like the practical advice provided by the authors, and the case studies make the advice come alive. In addition, it provides exercises to assist the new or "reluctant" networker to get out and "just do it."

The How-Tos of Social Networking!

As someone who studies group dynamics and group behavior, I was very interested to read The Network Effect and its emphasis on what you can do as a person to network effectively. I found the prose both clear and interesting, and all the practical anecdotes scattered through the chapters keep the text fresh and the narrative engaging.
Even though I think I already know a good deal about this from an academic perspective, I have already found that the practices recommended in the book have been helpful to me in my day-to-day interactions and have given me good ideas for how to improve my own networking abilities. The book presents enough of some of the interesting research findings of social network analysis to provide motivation, but doesn't drone on and on about the academics.
Networking really is a core skill of the modern professional, and this book presents the information you need to know, about how to start conversations, how to manage rapport, and how to end the conversations productively, in a useful and practical way. I highly recommend you get a copy!

Smart, Practical, & Enjoyable Guide to Networking

As I read through "The Network Effect" I took copious notes, and was re-acquainted with several tips and tricks of effective networking. This text is clear, reasoned, and fun. There is much here to guide the individual new to networking, or who has been away from it for some time. The psychological underpinnings act as backdrop to the "why" behind the approaches offered, and are immensely helpful. An element that could use more emphasis as a part of the human interaction of "networking" is level of self awareness, and it's importance. In my experience, the higher the level of self awareness, the more sophisticated the networking has the potential to be. For those with lower levels of self awareness, when the desired outcome is not achieved, individuals may be at a loss as to why it was not. Additionally, there might be more of a sense given as to how long these approaches take before desired outcomes can reasonably be achieved. For me, it is always helpful to know, "it may take several tries over weeks or months," or "this approach often works even on the first try!" Overall, this book is a handy, well laid out, and cost-effective guide. I recommend it.
