Well, at least something is in print

For those of you who have never met him, let me introduce you to Cornell Woolrich, the greatest suspense writer of all time. He's cruel, he'll wring you dry, he'll pummell you physically and emotionally until you just about break down. And you'll never be able to get enough.
Now let me introduce you to the ONLY thing that is in print from this remarkable man, who wrote over twenty novels and a few hundred short stories... The Omnibus, which contains I MARRIED A DEAD MAN and WALTZ INTO DARKNESS, two of the last novels of his "main" period and both written under the psuedonym William Irish, and five short stories collected under the Title "Rear Window". I MARRIED A DEAD MAN is one of Woolrich's best: existentially terrifying, incredibly depressing, and wholly dependant on bizarre coincindences that you must just accept as being part of his cruel and mocking universe. WALTZ is a strange choice to include, since it uncharacteriscally takes place in a period setting (1880s Louisiana) and depends less on crime and suspense than his other works, but it is nonetheless captivating -- his dark view of life and love still sits at the helm, but this novel isn't representative of his work the way you would expect for inclusion in an "Omnibus".
As for the shorts, they are uniformally a strong group. "Change of Muder" and "Post-Mortem" are solid if not incredible, but they do show you what some of his typical magazine work was like. "Rear Window" (which was first published as "It Had To Be Murder") is still a great story, even if you've seen the movie a few hundred times. Woolrich keeps the action tense and clautrophobic they way no one else can. "Momentum" (first published as "Murder Always Gathers Momemtum") is a delirious action nightmare that outdoes Camus on the existential level (Woolrich is far far ahead of any French writer for existential despair -- and yet he's the one out of print, go figure!). It resembles another excellent story, "Dusk to Dawn" that Woolrich wrote a few years before.
And then there's "Three O'Clock". Oh God. God, what can I say about this story? Woolrich's biographer called it his greatest a work, and to read it is "to die a little." Be warned, this is a wrecking piece of prose, so tense and so frightening that you will never forget it, although you may try....
This collection is worth the price just for this short story alone.

Let me introduce you to my new favorite author

I just finished reading "Waltz into Darkness" about five minutes ago. I had to log on to write a review right away because it was so wonderful. Cornell Woolrich is the master of suspense.. it is impossible to put this book down. I tried to go away from the reading to savor the moment, but alas, I was drawn automatically back into reading. I had to know what would happen next!
"Waltz into Darkness" was the reason for my purchase of the book. I had seen the movie "Original Sin" and was rather taken with the plot, if not the movie itself. I discovered the "Cornell Woolrich Omnibus" and thought, well, why not?
Let me just say that I am so glad that I bought this book. I am an avid fan of James Ellroy, but other than that noir fiction was not known to me. Cornell Woolrich's writing was consistently well written, amazingly well-timed, and delivered in a manner that can only be compared with the likes of F.Scott Fitzgerald. (By the way, it has been said that Woolrich considered Fitzgerald an idol.)
Let's start at the beginning. The five short stories are so diverse. Everyone knows "Rear Window" because of it's Hitchcock fame. Very good, but let's not shun the others just because they are not well known. The best would HAVE to be "Three O'Clock." It has the heart racing and pulse quicking before one can get into the first few pages. The other stories are good.. I was also impressed with "Post-Mortem" and "Change of Murder." "Momentum" was the only one where I was put off by the ending.
The first novel was "I Married a Dead Man." Wow.. fabulous. It leaves you wondering what exactly happened, which normally bothers me beyond belief. However, this was done so well.. and IT COULD HAVE ACTUALLY HAPPENED AT THE TIME... which makes it all the more intriguing. In the middle of reading the novel I decided to research Woolrich, as a man. I was that taken with the book.
"Waltz into Darkness" was the longest section of the book. It isn't the same kind of novel- I would still classify it as noir, but it is a time piece that has alot more descriptive elements. I finished the book and all I could think was "THE TRAUMA OF IT ALL!!!" I wanted to go into the story and make things right for the main character (Durand.) It was a highly enjoyable experience, tragic though it may have been.
I would recommend this book to anyone with a brain who enjoys fiction that will keep you jumping. I am disappointed to know that I have nothing else to read that can possibly be as good now that I have finished the "Omnibus." If possible, I would rate this even higher than the five allotted stars.

NOT for lonely, rainy nights alone!

I discovered Cornell Woolrich twenty years ago, his dark, macarbre thrillers leaving me a terrified teen! With this in mind, the novels and short stories collected in the omnibus were 're-reads' for me, yet they still left me in a state of spellbound suspense. However, if you're looking for an 'Agatha Christie' type whodunnit where, by the final page, the killer is safely locked up and everyone has tea...Forget it. Woolrich's work is dark and truly haunting, leaving a thrillingly eerie aftertaste. I recommend this omnibus edition to fans of Film Noir and/or people who like to scare themselves silly!

Outstanding Primer on Health Care IT

I met Bob Hoyt, the author / Editor, at the HIMSS (Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society) 2010 annual convention in Atlanta. We had an interesting conversation about how quickly this space is changing and the demands upon him to keep this volume updated and current. About the Author

Bhuvan Unhelkar (BE, MDBA, MSc, PhD; FACS) has more than two decades of strategic as well as hands-on professional experience in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) industry. He lead the Mobile Internet Research and Applications Group (MIRAG) at the University of Western Sydney, where he is also an adjunct Associate Professor. Apart from Green IT, many other industrial courses developed by Dr. Unhelkar have now been delivered to business executives and IT professionals globally (in Australia, USA, Canada, UK, China, India, Sri Lanka, New Zealand and Singapore). I especially like the "Principles" and the "Symptoms" sections of this book. It is laid out to learn both the principle behind palliative care and to be used as a hands on tool. This book will be useful to a lot of health care providers who deal with sick children and end of life issues. This book was badly needed. Highly recommended.

About the Author
Phyllis Reid, MSW, CPP is a Clinical Social Worker who works as a Psychotherapist with adults, children and families in various inner city schools and communities in Miami for over a decade. She holds a masters degree in social work, bachelor degrees in Psychology, Behavioral Sciences and is a trained Traumatologist. She is a strong proponent of cultural diversity, something she states is as natural to her as the skin that covers her body. She attributes this to being born and raised in her diverse cultural and ethnic island home of Jamaica, with its motto, Out of Many One People. Miami s multi-cultural make up was one of the reasons she decided to reside there for over thirty five years and continues to serve its diverse population.

Powerful Positive Message

As I prepared myself to read this book, I was under the assumption that it was "just a children's book", but as I began reading, I realized that this book was backed by a powerful message that would speak volumes about the author and it would relate to people of all walks of life. A message about a group of friends "brothers and sisters", that share their world, and their view of how its all relative, while enjoying a day out at the park, you learn that these children are full of faith and love, and have come to share their strong moral values by empowering another group who could benefit from their beliefs and positivity. The book brings everything of the world together and puts unity into focus. One Diverse Universe is an amazing read, with beautiful, colorful and vivid images and graphics, that appeal to the senses and imagination. The Puzzle that isn't complete without each individual unique piece, we come together, problem solving, analytic thinking, imagination, inspiration, beauty and faith, this book has a wide combination of positive aspects that anyone reading it can walk away feeling at peace.
Moral of the story: "Accept, respect, spread peace and love..." and "the answer is one, oneness; we are all one, one God, one universe, one world, one family of man." Very enjoyable read.

Great Teaching Tool

This book has an amazing outlook on bringing everyone together. With small children teaching the lesson, This is a great way for children to connect with them and see the world as they do. For me and my children this helps bring it to life.
This book also is a great jumping off board to talk to your children about the world being one place and we are all connected. My children learned so much as did I about the greater good and understanding of Gods plan for us to live in harmony as a One.

I recommend this book to all parents of school aged kids. It will help them understand that we are one in this big world and should take care of each other.

Real life magician !

Make no mistake about it: Malcolm Lowry was an OCCULT novelist of genius. And one of the first to appreciate this was Perle Epstein. Other biographers have drawn attention to this fact but even Douglas Day only devoted two or three pages to the mighty influence upon Lowry of Aleister Crowley's magical son Charles Stansfeld Jones (Frater Achad ). Achad's speciality was the Kabbala and his two little works QBL or the Bride's Reception and The Anatomy of the Body of God were huge helps to Malcolm when he completed the final draft of his undoubted masterpiece Under the Volcano. Indeed, Jones, rightly or wrongly, had claimed the high occult status of the Magister Templi grade in Crowley's Argenteum Astrum order which involved the crossing of the Abyss high up on the Kabbalistic Tree of Life . Perhaps Jones succeeded in doing this (he was much nicer in tone than his magical father!) as I myself did way into my own occult career (c/r Black Pilgrimage in Dr G Speaks). But Lowry's Consul, another Geoffrey (Firmin) absolutely failed to do this in the delirium-ridden climax of Volcano, thereby falling into the Abyss and its chasm of Hell !!!
What makes Lowry such a brilliant and pertinent teacher of the Kabbalistic occult, even after such a brief period of tuition from Jones, is the way he fuses the grandest, most epic occult concepts with the often hellish enough trials and tribulations of mundane, material life. One learns so much more from this than from abstract, impersonal occult tomes even alleged classics like those of Jones himself.
It is to Epstein's credit that this work charts such a crucial role.

Made for Freedom - excellent!

I bought this on the basis of its title 'Made for Freedom', a subject I'm interested in. And I have to say, it is superb. Very insightful and covers a multitude of topics on the human condition. This is a book with depth and it leaves me feeling satiated, but wanting to re-read it because it offers so much material for thought.
It explains the human condition in such a way as to want you to grasp freedom and reject the materialism of this world, but it also offers explanations as to why this is difficult for many people to do. At one and the same time it encourages you to be yourself, explores the barriers to this, and offers ways to overcome them. I highly recommend it for those who like to think, are interested in the human condition, and in developing their own potential to its fullest.

This book deserves to be more widely known and read. It is about freedom as an attitude to life and a spiritual attitude. The author guides us through what freedom means in all its facets. I especially recommend this to people who have high ideals in life, who care about what it means to be human, and want to know how this integrates itself into the life of faith. The book is also remarkable because it takes account of the "narrative" or "subjective" turn in ideas in society without diverging from complete orthodoxy. Really we need books like this that can present traditional faith in a contemporary way. It answers a lot of the questions that young people will have today in language which is contemporary while being founded in a faith that is unchanging and true.
