A Unique Mix of Simplicity and Technicality

The author, Nick Hayes, is a great writer whose simplicity and technicality make a unique mix that's evident in all his books, including this one. Just as the name implies, "Teach Yourself Applied Psychology" is a self explanatory book. Every reader would find it a pleasure to read and easy to understand. It explores many areas of applied psychology in such a way that introduces the subject to a new reader as well as educate one with some advanced knowledge already. So there's something for everyone who has interest in learning about psychology. I would recommend any book by Nick Hayes, on psychological topics, including this one to any interested reader.

A very useful book with a doubtful title

It's very tempting to argue that you CAN'T teach yourself Applied Psychology - to learn AND apply psychology you have to interact (in a discipline-specified way) with people as well as with a book. After all, the author actually points out that it takes eight years to become a fully qualified (clinical) psychologist. So, having read this book, and made notes on it, I can honestly say that I have NOT taught myself psychology, applied or otherwise. But I have definitely learnt a lot.
This is indeed a very worthwhile introduction to various strands of psychology, and I personally found the chapters on Clinical Psychology and Counseling Psychology especially informative. All the traditional bases are covered (e.g. the psychoanalytic, behavioral, humanistic, cognitive approaches, etc.) along with (as the title would suggest) the practical applications.
I have found this book to be a useful support to academic study in related fields, and I have no hesitation in recommending it. It really deserves five stars, but I have given it only four as I'm being pedantic about the title, and I take very seriously the author's warning about it being "all too easy for people with only a limited amount of psychological knowledge to mislead the public, or to put that psychological knowledge into practice in a way which is manipulative and deceptive."

Good introduction to Psychology

I bought the book to increase my knowledge om psychology.The book gives a short, but sufficient introduction to the subject. I recomend it to anyone who wants to learn the basics.
