The struggle is real.
Nick Stahlnecker is eighteen and not ready to grow up yet. He has a summer job, a case of existential panic, and a hopeless crush on the unattainable Jai Hazenbrook. Except how do you know that your coworker’s unattainable unless you ask to blow him in the portapotty?
That’s probably not what Dad meant when he said Nick should act more like an adult.
Twenty-five -year-old Jai is back in his hometown of Franklin, Ohio, just long enough to earn the money to get the hell out again. His long-term goal of seeing more of the world is worth the short-term pain of living in his mother’s basement, but only barely.
Meeting Nick doesn’t fit in with Jai’s plans at all, but, as Jai soon learns, you don’t have to travel halfway around the world to have the adventure of a lifetime.
This is not a summer romance. This is a summer friendship-with-benefits. It’s got pizza with disgusting toppings, Netflix and chill, and accidental exhibitionism. That’s all. There are no feelings here. None. Shut up.

Publishers Weekly - "Henry . . . brings pure fun and a feel for pop culture-fueled young adult insecurities to a coming-of-age comedy of errors full of Netflix, pizza, family warmth, and awkward sex."

This story is ridiculously cute. Nick is eighteen with a temporary job in the summer between high school and university. He's anxious about the upcoming changes in his life, doesn't want to be a virgin any more, and has absolutely no filter and no subtlety, so he ogles the gorgeous Jai and is hilarious with his worship of Jai's hotness and especially his perfect ass. Jai is self-possessed, a little more mature, and mostly amused by Nick's spaziness. The two of them are super sweet together, and the story is fast paced, full of humor, sharp dialogue and a wonderful group of characters, all with their own quirks and shades. I loved how well every character is fleshed out, from Nick's parents to Jai's mom and sister and extended family. Nick's best friend is amazing, but even the best friend's girlfriend seems fully dimensional, just from little snippets of interactions. The side characters don't take over the story, but they make it more interesting because they seem real. I pretty much had a grin on my face from beginning to end while reading this book.

A surprising, funny and touching romantic comedy about life as we live it today.
By Ulysses Dietz
Why five stars? Because this book surprised me, with laughter and with tears, and not just because it reminded me of when I very young and gay and unsure of myself (and desperately trying not to be a virgin any more). It also made me think about my role as the father of a rather lost 21-year-old. I see a lot of my son in Nick, and it brought me up short.
Nick Stahlnecker is a cute, scatterbrained LOTR fanboy. He is a very young seventeen and is feeling increasingly panicked about his scheduled departure for college in the fall. Devon Staples is his (straight) BFF, and the thought of facing the future without him simply increases the panic. Jai Hazenbrook is the impossibly cool and handsome twenty-five-year-old co-worker who inadvertently leads the impulsive Nick astray and triggers the summer…fling (whatever) that is at the heart (the big, warm, beating heart) of this sweet, laugh-out-loud not-quite-romance.
Devon is possibly my favorite straight boy ever. It seems to impossible to me that two teenage male friends could actually say “I love you” to each other. I hope this isn’t Lisa Henry being delusional, because Devon and Nick’s co-dependent nerdy friendship is one of the sweetest things I’ve ever experienced. This would not have been possible when I was a teenager, and it fills my heart with hope.
Nick’s very awkward friend-with-benefits arrangement with the worldly, slightly distant Jai is a perfect set-up for the author to study both families. The real surprise is that we find that both Nick and Jai love their families. Each young man copes with his anxieties and his unclear aspirations in different ways. Nick screws up and gets lost in his fantasy world; Jai runs away for nine months a year and travels the real world. Both of them are absorbing experiences outside their own daily existence to try to give meaning to their lives. That is, until both Nick and Jai find that the other guy is beginning to do that for them.
I also give huge credit to Lisa Henry for making both of the families important and relatable. The hardest part of “adulating” is raising children. We all screw up, even if we do our best and love with all our hearts. That’s what makes it so difficult.
This is not some simple happily-ever-after story. I mean, it could be, but that’s not the point. This is about the potential for friendship, and love, to open up a world of communication and understanding that can transform a life. Or maybe more than one.

Completely Enjoyable
By Ramona Cote
I always have this vague sense of guilt when I rate a novel five stars and it’s not HIGH LITERATURE. As though only the very pinnacle of literature deserves the rating. I need to work on my chill. In reality, Adulting 101 definitely deserves all five of its stars for being everything that is perfect about a humorous, romantic comedy.
I absolutely adored both leading men, Nick and Jai. Nick is so adorably confused about nearly everything in his life, but he is remarkably confident in how much he wants Jai. Nick is 18, and one character describes him as a “young” 18, which I would agree with. Despite this, he isn’t irritating. The author side steps the pitfalls of many other writers by avoiding going too far with the “teenager” stereotype and Nick is refreshing and enjoyable because of it.
Jai is almost too good to be true. He’s gorgeous, laid back, accepting of Nick’s many and varied foibles, and honest about his feelings. See what I mean? Too good to be true. But it works. It works in the way that Jai and Nick just work. They make sense. I could give Lisa Henry a standing ovation for skipping the (OMG, so overdone) break up and get back together because of misunderstanding-stupidity-other people—age difference-whatever. I LOVE that they got together, and despite life not going exactly the way they planned, they roll with it together. I also love that while their age different was apparent in their personalities; they didn’t make it The Thing that the novel revolved around.
A coming of age story, a romance/first love story, a dash of enduring friendship, and you’ve got a great little book. The only thing I would wish for was more, and that’s what I always want when I finish something I really enjoyed.
