Excellent How To

This is a very detailed, how to guide regarding double bevel marquetry. The author describes the necessary materials and equipment in detail. He then performs two projects. Each project is described in extensive detail. When the reader has finished both of these projects, the readers will be confident enough to try some extensive marquetry--maybe not Silas Kopf stuff but the reader will clearly be ready for lots of projects.

I purchased "Woodworker's Guide to Veneering & Inlay", "Marquetry Course" and "The Fine Art of Marquetry: Creating Images in Wood Using Sawn Veneers" together at the same time. All three are quite beautiful in terms of photography and packed with very useful, detailed knowledge. I started out reading "Woodworker's Guide to Veneering & Inlay" first. It contains a great deal of information about the creation of veneer and inlay materials. This was an excellent lead in to the "Marquetry Course". This book discusses a number of projects in increasing complexity. I then read "The Fine Art of Marquetry: Creating Images in Wood Using Sawn Veneers". I found this book to be quite detailed both in direction and step-by-step photographs. If you cannot create the basic project as outlined in this book you should not blame the book. Taking nothing away from the other two books, if you can only purchase one, I would start with "The Fine Art of Marquetry: Creating Images in Wood Using Sawn Veneers". But I highly recommend all three!

A great way to start

I am new to Marquetry but needed to create a small flower as an inlay on a small table. A couple of years ago I had taken a course in hand sawn veneer from Craig and had watched him make a small leaf using marquetry. That small leaf is featured in the first part of the book while making the lotus flower shown on the book cover is described in detail in the last half. It took me a couple of tries to make an acceptable lotus flower but I now feel quite comfortable with the process. The book provides a ton of illustrated detail, walking you through every step of cutting and shading every piece. I also own a couple of videos on marquetry and the book is a much more useful learning aid.

Knowledge of God and Self-Assessment

I did not know what to expect due to the title of this book by Dr. Brewer. Then I read the very positive "endorcements" by the many well-known writers, teachers and pastors. The book covers for the new, young and growing Christian a package of evangelical and fundamental Bible-based education. I was kind-of looking for a suggested "formula" at the end for a person to carefully assess/measure his or her "Spiritual Quotient." This book, to me, is Teaching Life's Issues Class 1 thru 101. Dr. Brewer, an excellent communicator, just might consider his next book on the same or simular topics and sujects and cover Class 201 thru the "End times".

Well rounded approach

Mark's got a nice book here. He decides to take on every controversial issue known to Christendom in one book, and somehow pulls it off.

What he does exactly right is the structure of the book. The first section lays a fairly clever foundation for approaching spiritual issues. He draws on the likes of Howard Gardner's multiple intelligences to say that there is a spiritual intelligence that simply helps people live life better. He then names the four pillars on which Christian decision making are made: Scripture, Reason, Wise Counsel, and the Holy Spirit. Then he dives into everything from homosexuality to war, politics and money, other religions and hell.

The only weakness of the book is that he has a fundamentally and unquestioned modernist approach to the Scriptures. He asserts that every passage has only one interpretation (p 50) and that the author's original intention can be discerned, which begs the obvious questions about who subdivides the text and whether or not any of us have only one intention in the things we communicate, much less whether or not literary genres like parables can be constrained to single meanings. Given the foundation, American evangelicals carry the day on most of the issues.

The strength of the book is the voice. Brewer writes from his own experience with nearly every subject in here, and you can tell he's a Pastor who cares about people and about intellectual honesty. In this world, that combination is painfully unique and eagerly welcomed. So on that front, whether you agree with his conclusions or not, this is exactly the kind of book you want to use for conversation fodder. Books should be pretentious enough to make some grand assertions, or else they're not worth reading. But this book does so without a combative edge. So if you want a beginning point for discussions, lectures, or small groups on social issues, this is the place to begin.

Such a important and easy to understand book

My husband has had 4stage liver cancer and we have been using cannabis oil as one of the alternative treatments with great success. He got diagnosed over 3 years ago and he is doing well, living a quality life. We got contacted from many people all over the world and now we have a great book to recommend which is both easy to understand, easy to share with family and friends who can't understand what cannabis get do as medicine, but at the same time accurate and even with suggestion for how to use the medicine. I highly recommend this book for anyone in medical crisis and also for anyone who wants to stay healthy.

Excellent book !

Even though I had heard of the discovery of the endocannabinoid system and CB1 and CB2 receptors prior to reading this book, I learned so much more about using cannabis to treat medical conditions from this book. Many details about dosing, relating to different medical conditions are covered in depth. It is encouraging to read so much concise information about cannabis use as a medicine. Knowing the history of cannabis prohibition, it’s easy to understand why we can’t get this information from doctors. It’s a shame, considering the safety profile of cannabis, that more states don’t have medical cannabis laws enacted. So many details about the human endocannabinoid system are explained and easy to understand. The author also suggests other ideas to help bring this information to your regular doctor, in an effort to educate the doctor & enhance the doctor patient experience. I feel more empowered to choose a new primary care doctor from the information presented in this book. Cannabis is a nutrient not acknowledged by most medical professionals, and helps our bodies heal when used properly. I like the authors presentation of the material, it was easy to read, not full of medical jargon where I have to look up a word every three pages.

One of the best books i have ever read

Dive Book 3 is one of the best books i have ever read. It is about these four teen interns that are in Cote St. Luce on a diving internship for the summer. They start off having a good time and everything is running smoothly. But, after about three weeks of being there they find out that their captain is a treasure hunter and not a scientist trying to "learn" about the ocean. He is just using them for the treasure that they find. But what they werent expecting was a few deaths because of this situation. They get through the summer by sticking together. To find out what happens you will have to read the book, but the story makes more sense if you read the series!!!

I really think that these stories are great to read and are perfect for people that like stories with mystery and action. I think that these books are great for anyone in grades 4-8th!!!!

dive 3: the danger

When the going gets tough friends stick together, right? Well these are pretty close friends if you ask me. Dante's colorblind, Star got the binds, and Kas is going on a 703 feet deep dive, as for Adriana, she's stuck on some internship while her brother and uncle are on some archeologist dig. Their friend and Captain died because of one person. Now they have found the Griffin with a hidden story behind it. The only thing that stands in their way is an 18 foot tiger shark, and Marina.

I love adventure books, ecspecially this one. Kas has a horrible memmory and a storg, but tender attitude. I think Gordon Korman did a great job on this series, but this book got me. I would strongly recommend this book.

Great writer of "series" books

I bought this and several other Gordon Korman books for my 11 year-old son. He devours everything Korman writes. Anything that will capture a boy's interest and make him "beg" to read is okay with me, and Korman seems to have the formula to keep kids this age riveted to the end!

Glenn J. Morris is an eighth dan shidoshi in Togakure Ryu Bujinkan Ninpo, a martial lineage that has existed unbroken since the eleventh century, a six dan black belt in Nihon Karate Jujutsu, and a master instructor of esoteric meditation. He is vice-president of Pacific Biotech International of Houston, Texas, a research and development company, as well as Dean of General Academics in Eurotechnical Research University. Morris mixes fighting tales, philosophy, and general humor and wisdom in all his titles. Ruminations of a Ninjutsu Teacher....

Glenn Morris picks up where he left off in his first book, "Path Notes of an American Ninja Master" (1993). This is not an instructional book on ninjutsu per se (no pictures), although it is chok-full of Morris's further journey on the martial arts /ninpo path (Bujinkan style under Masaaki Hatsumi), anecdotes and interpretations of philosophy, both Asian, Occidental, and other. I found it similar in some ways to Robert Smith's book, "Martial Musings". Some of Glenn Morris's most interesting views he presents in Chapter 9, "Characteristics of Shugyosha Across Cultures" (page 169). Shugyosha he defines as a person who is searching for the truth...I have a feeling that this is what Morris is doing with his series of books.
There is also the enjoyably opinionated Chapter 11, "Mud and Water, Purity and Power" where Morris allows his biases against other well known (sometimes questionable) martial artists of our time, to hang out in the wind. Among them Harunaka Hoshino (originally known as Chi Yuan) who created his own ninpo art from Japanese karate and kobudo during the ninja boom, Choi Hong-hi of Taekwon-Do whom he lambasts as having earned only shodan (1st black belt) before his return to Korea from Japan (now, now--nobody promoted Hatsumi sensei to 15th dan), and Genbukan Ninpo's Shoto Tanemora, once a student of Ninja Great Masaaki Hatsumi (and others) whom he dismisses as "...another cop..." with robotic movements (page 244). Some of the criticisms are fair, some are not...Morris doesn't bother to share his sources.
I don't accept Glenn Morris's interpretations and claims concerning the many things supernatural/psychic which pepper his writings--but if I only read things I agreed with, I wouldn't be living! I am, I admit, a cautious skeptic. I find Morris to be overly generous in the way he doles out his faith, often optimistic in accepting theories and studies which have not been scientifically counducted or checked, although even he draws the line at things like Alien abductions (see Chapter 13, pages 312-316). On the other hand, his insights are honest, and personal. In sharing his beliefs, he hides nothing, holds back nothing. Reading between the (esoteric) lines without any adaptation or interpretation, I find much of the advice he offers on this volume to be homespun, and often sensible.
Morris seems a cross between a scholar-warrior and a pseudo-intellectual hippy. This book is entertaining and fun to read. You don't have to share the man's opinions or beliefs to enjoy his adventures. If you enjoy martial arts autobiographies, or reading the personal thoughts of other people, this volume is just the thing.

Another Five Star Review

At the risk of being redundant, I just wanted to echo some sentiments already expressed here. You have to read Dr. Morris's work in a certain frame of mind because every paragraph is a jewel waiting to be discovered and embraced.

Like others have said, it is not a "How-To" book on ninjutsu, but an essay on enlightenment and especially on the physical component of enlightenment. I can't count the times I have reread this book and every time found myself smiling at some new gem.

In places it borders on ridiculous and you ask yourself, "How could he expect me to believe this?" But living in that world of possibilities for a moment is part of the joy.

If you want to be a human being...and really, who doesn't?...come study Dr. Morris's map of how he got there.

HEY!!! Be prepared to study his section on the Go-Dai hard!!!

A hidden book of USEFUL strategies for living.

This book is a must for anyone trying to delve into the myseteries of the self. May be of particular interest to Jungian Psychologists out there due to the discussion of the Shadow and how it manifests in various aspects of the American culture. As always, pay attention to the reccommended readings that Shidoshi Morris mentions. A very jam-packed book of useful strategies.... you might want to take a refresher course on universal symbolism to get the most out of the book.
