About the Author

Dr. Timothy Noakes is Discovery health professor of exercise and sports science at the University of Cape Town and director of the medical research council/UCT research unit for exercise science and sports medicine at the Sports Science Institute of South Africa in Newlands. Noakes received his MD from the University of Cape Town. He is a veteran of more than 70 marathons and ultramarathons. He is an editorial board member for many international sport science journals and a former president of the South African Sports Medicine Association. In 1999, he was elected as one of 22 founding members of the International Olympic Committee's Olympic Science Academy. Noakes is also a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine. He and his wife, Marilyn Anne, reside in Cape Town, South Africa.

If you could only own one book...

I started training for a half marathon a few months ago and like everything that I do I totally immerse myself into it. So after buying some books on the various training aspects of running I came across this one. After reading the reviews on Amazon I had to buy it and it did not disappoint. I like how the book starts out with the science and biological aspects of running, for example types of muscle fibers, oxygen transport, running economy, etc. and then moves into more practical aspects of how that will affect your training. I really enjoy reading this book and it has helped me to understand the reasons behind the training modalities. I am now training for a marathon and along with my tempo runs, speed work and long runs, I have included this book in my training regimen as required reading. It's as enjoyable as those easy runs and if you could only own one book on running this would be it.

The run book to end all run books

Talk about a read and a half. This book has everything you ever wanted to know about running from how to go slow to how to go fast and how to eat while going slow or fast. It also covers going short, long and how to make a workout plan. Ever wondered why muscles cramp? Or how muscles stretch or contract or the effect going down hill has on your quads? Read this book. Be prepared though because this is ALLOT of book, don't expect to knock this thing out in a weekend. It's the source of sources and has all of the information that websites and other books have been parroting for years now.

Not a book for the Novice Marathoner, but a GREAT Resource for the Experienced

For beginning marathoners, this is by NO means a book for you to find your answer to the perfect training (unless you are a marathon runner with an exercise science background). I don't believe Noakes intended this book to be read by a novice runner. The information is simply too overwhelming. Enjoy following a simple training plan and getting nutirition information from your local run specialty store (and let the coaches and running store do all of the reading between the lines)!

For coaches and experienced marathoners, this is a great book that summarizes research. At the same time, Noakes doesn't leave out the details of training that are too often thought to be common knowledge such as training apparel.

As a college coach, I enjoyed reading this book for the scientific side of running that Noakes can contribute because of his background in exercise science. I simply do not have time to read through individual research publications, as Noakes has done, and then compile the information by subject matter.

This book should remain on the shelf for those times when you need a source of reference. The science of running is constantly evolving (and certainly has since the publication of this book). Coaching runners is about trial and error. Coaches must understand that every athlete is going to react to a stimulus differently. Thus, this is a great resource but should NOT be treated as the only source of training for runners in the 10k and up.

Meteor showers are among the most spectacular celestial events that may be observed by the naked eye, and have been the object of fascination throughout human history. In “Meteor Showers: An Annotated Catalog,” the interested observer can access detailed research on over 100 annual and periodic meteor streams in order to capitalize on these majestic spectacles. Each meteor shower entry includes details of their discovery, important observations and orbits, and gives a full picture of duration, location in the sky, and expected hourly rates. Armed with a fuller understanding, the amateur observer can better view and appreciate the shower of their choice.

The original book, published in 1988, has been updated with over 25 years of research in this new and improved edition. Almost every meteor shower study is expanded, with some original minor showers being dropped while new ones are added. The book also includes breakthroughs in the study of meteor showers, such as accurate predictions of outbursts as well as comet and meteor observations from the 6th century to the 17th century that were not published in the first edition. It holds all of the information needed to inspire a new observer or provide deeper knowledge to the long-time enthusiast.

About the Author
Gary W. Kronk received his Bachelor of Science in Journalism from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. He has been employed at Washington University at St. Louis since 1985, where he is a programmer analyst, and occasionally teaches classes on software programs.

Observing, researching, and writing about comets has been an activity the author has participated in for most of his life, with over 2,000 observations of over 130 comets. He is the author of seven titles, and has been published in “Sky & Telescope,” “Astronomy,” “Icarus,” “the Journal of the Association of Lunar and Planetary Observers” and more. His books include “Comets: A Descriptive Catalog” (Enslow Publishers, 1984), “Meteor Showers” (Enslow, 1988), and a six volume series title “Cometography” with Cambridge University Press. The 5th volume was published in 2010. In 2004, the International Astronomical Union’s Minor Planet Center announced that minor planet number 48300 was being given the name “Kronk” in honor of the author’s extensive research  for his Cometography series.

Encyclopedic reference on the history of meteor showers

This is an encyclopedic reference on the history of all the major meteor showers and many minor ones. The table of contents lists about 120 meteor showers. Although the reading is a little dry, having this information in book form is more convenient than reading the same material online. It's a reference work to enjoy on rainy evenings.

A very complete, well-written book on the subject, and I have not seen another book that covers all major and many minor showers so well. Only 4 stars because there is not ONE picture in the whole book. Certainly a book on meteor showers deserves at least a few photos.

It is a light-hearted romantic comedy that I enjoyed reading.

I loved this book. It is very well written. All the characters are amazing and the storyline is superb. I think it is a must read for all romance lovers. It is humourous as well. The best kind of book in my opinion.
Rafe and Frankie are a cute couple. I liked reading their story. Rafe has a job. He needs to convince Frankie to sell her restaurant. But he did not count on falling for this girl. Frankie knows that she is not Rafe's type but she is flustered by him. She is attracted to him and has no idea how to react to his charms. But when she finds out the real reason why Rafe was there then things might not go so well, for both of them...

a great blend of romance, angst and humor

This is the first book I have read by Wendy Byrne and it won't be the last. I really enjoyed this story. It kept me entertained throughout, eliciting a array of emotions from me as I became more enmeshed in Frankie and Rafe's story.

I loved Frankie's character, her bold determination in the face of corporate greed and an enormous amount of pressure to sell her family restaurant, was admirable. She was a campaigner for the underdog, defiantly standing up for her small town and their right to remain untouched by the bright lights of progress. She was also a caregiver, always the first one to look after the disadvantaged, the ones down on their luck, making sure that everyone in the town had a meal at night, often to her own financial detriment. She never gave up although Rafe ended up testing her resolve at times, remaining optimistic where others would have crumbled.

Rafe was the cold-hearted businessman, only in it for himself, never letting emotion get in his way of doing his job. He was called The Closer, the one who could talk anyone around in to selling to the developers he did contract work for. Because of his family background, he was single minded, never wanting to fall victim to the emotion of love and how that, in his eyes, could only end in disaster and heartache. Little did he know that underneath that icy facade, his heart would soon start to melt once he met the elusive Frankie. He wasn't prepared for the assault on his senses and fought becoming emotionally involved every step of the way. Poor Rafe, he could have saved himself such a lot of heartache had he not been so misguided by his past.

We are privvy to Rafe's plan is from the beginning, and are under no illusion as to what his intentions are regarding befriending Frankie. He was intending to use her in which ever way he could to get her to sell to the developer and my heart ached for Frankie, knowing what was to come when the truth came out and how it would devastate her. Rafe really tested my ability to forgive but the way I was able to be in his head helped me see, even though I didn't agree with them, why he made the decisions he did, twisted and hurtful though they were. His icy heart was melting and he was thrown for a loop trying to figure out how to deal with that.

Their burgeoning relationship was intense and passionate, sexy and intimate. I really could feel the connection these two had and could recognise the conflict within Rafe and when his feelings for Frankie were genuine. I enjoyed their banter back and forth and the dual POV's really added to my overall enjoyment. They had a great sense of humor and suited each other with their matching wit.

Frankie surrounded herself with a most entertaining group of townsfolk and I really enjoyed how they injected humor into the story as well as a sense of family who supported Frankie wholeheartedly.

The Millionaires Deception was a great read with a great mix of romance, angst and laugh out loud moments, and a great cast of characters. I loved the epilogue but would have loved a further tiny peak into their future, maybe a year down the track would have left me completely satisfied.

Ahhh I've come over all warm and fuzzy inside after finishing this story. It was the icing on the cake, the sugar in the coffee or the grape in the wine, nope that doesn't work, but you get my meaning. This book tells a sweet story and one that is very easy to digest.

To start, let me say that the cover and book title didn't live up to my expectations. I was expecting one of those run of the mill millionaire playboy books but what I got was Rafe, a wealthy bad-boy and his nemesis comes in the form of Frankie Ritacco.

Wrongly assuming Frankie to be a man, Rafe was pleasantly surprised when he comes face to face, well face to legs, with a gorgeous woman. The only problem was that Rafe was in town to force her to sell her family's cafe to an unscrupulous businessman. Things don't go to plan though as Frankie and her feisty but vulnerable personality quickly creep under Rafe's skin and make a one way journey right towards his heart.

Frankie and Rafe become closer and closer to each other the more time they spend together and not only does Frankie become engrained on Rafe's mind but so does the town, the locals and their personal battle against his employer.

The townsfolk are also loveable in this story. From all of Frankie's fiancés to the elderly book club ladies, this is a highly entertaining read and one which will keep you chuckling to yourself as you imagine their antics.

Having not read this author's work before I would certainly seek out another story from her. The writing style is strong, the story well balanced and the HEA welcomed. It's not a challenging story, and it doesn't have any angst but what it does have is an easy to read and thoroughly pleasant storyline.

About the Author
Barbara K. Given, Ph.D., is author of Teaching to the Brain s Natural Learning Systems (2002) and Learning Styles: A Guide for Teachers and Parents (1999/2000). Barb is retired after more than 50 years as a teacher, associate professor, and researcher. She began her career working with children and youth with mental retardation, and later taught second grade before returning to teach students with learning disabilities and emotional disturbances. In 1974 Barb initiated the Special Education Teacher Preparation Program at George Mason University (GMU), Fairfax, Virginia, and served as its coordinator for several years. During this time she also initiated an on-campus academic summer program (Breakthrough Learning) for children and adolescents with learning and behavior difficulties and the graduate student intern teachers who taught them. After retiring from the Graduate School of Education, Barb served as a research faculty member with the Krasnow Institute for Advanced Studies at GMU.

Bobbi DePorter is author or co-author of more than a dozen books including, Quantum Teaching (1999), Quantum Learning (1992), The Seven Biggest Teen Problems and How to Turn Them into Strengths (2006) and The 8 Keys of Excellence (2000). Bobbi is cofounder and CEO of Quantum Learning Network (QLN), a leading education company based in Oceanside, California. Highly recommend!

I highly recommend this program for educators and all organizations who work with youth.
